[Solution] YouTube linking to Gmail log-in error

Post by hiberNative »

so for a while now i haven't been able to reach my youtube account because i couldn't log on to it. i had it via my hotmail, and one day the "link to gmail" button after each log-in was too tempting, so i pressed it to get rid of it. big mistake!

i could log in via my gmail mail and password on youtube, but at the next page i could either make a new account or log in on an existing account. when i tried to log in on my current one, i got this message:

This account is already linked to a different Google username.

this gave me a headache a good while, but i found a solution today:
1. Go to YouTube, and click Login.

2. Click on "Can't access your account?"

3. Enter your YouTube username.

4. You will receive an email saying your account is linked with a Google Account, so you need to reset that password instead. Click the link in the email.

5. To reset your password, you will asked to enter your Google email address. This is the misleading part because the correct email to enter is not necessarily your GoogleMail address. Lets find out the right one.

6. Open a new tab/window.

7. Go to YouTube, and click Login.

8. Enter your YouTube username and password.

9. You will be told you have to login with your Google Account. The username field will be pre-filled with an email address. This is the correct email address.

10. Go back to your other tab/window and enter the correct email address.

11. You will receive a password reset email, so just click the link and follow the process, changing your password. Don't worry, you can change it back afterwards.

12. Go back to the YouTube login page, and enter your Google username and password.

13. Hurray! We're in!

14. You will now probably find that when you come back to these forums, you will be asked to create a username again. Ugh...

15. This is essentially the same problem that was happening on YouTube, but this time its a little easier to fix.

16. Go to http://www.gmail.com and login.

17. You should now get your forum account back.

18. If you ever logout of your YouTube account and log back in again, you will need to repeat step 16.
hallelujah. i am now finally logged in.
hopefully this will help someone who's suffering in silence.
