Proper commander seat for tanks.

Post by Fungwu »

It would be nice to see the .50 cal seat on the tanks be replaced with a commander seat, which would be under armor, have a periscope and be able to fire the .50 cal remotely. I think this would have a couple uses:

Extra set of eyes
Advantage against infantry
A safer seat for a guy who can jump out and scout ahead on foot without leaving the tank half manned.

i like this idea. although it allows you to better engage enemies at range it then further limits the tanks ability to defend itself in close quarters with the smaller FOV, meaning more infantry will be required to defend it. seems worth while

What you are essentially suggesting is the TUSK upgrade for the Abrams (And equivalent for other tanks if they exist). The TUSK upgrade does the following:
The field-installed kit includes armor upgrades to the rear and bottom of the hull; an installation of slat armor to protect the engine compartment and use of appliqué reactive armor tiles to improve flank protection. A CROWS remote controlled weapon station (RWS) mounting a .50 caliber machine gun is replacing the commander's 0.5" cupola mounted heavy machine gun, enabling the commander to operate the weapon when "buttoned up" under closed hatches.

I do like the idea, unfortunately the TUSK has been suggested many times before which is more or less what you are suggesting..
