Weapon aiming does not fit reality

Devs,

Again an excellent job on this mod!

I am curious as to why the guns are so bad for sighting?

When a person that is trained looks down the sight of his weapon, he will generally hit what he is aiming at. Not so in this mod. The rounds shot hit all over the place, even after aiming for a few seconds. This is really a problem when using the sniper rifles.

Sorry, but it looks as if there is purposeful poor hitting introduced. I know EA does this and it is one think I do not like about their games.

Can this be addressed and corrected?

Thank you,
Davestrike

You have to crouch, wait a few seconds then you can shoot and aim accurately

Not just prone and start shooting immediately then your bullets will go everywhere

First off, Welcome to the forums! :D

It's called deviation. the DEVs added it to simulate a soldier readying his rifle for the shot. While crouched your deviation settles much faster than standing, and the DEVs added a deviation penalty right after you go prone, to prevent prone-spamming(or attempt to) in CQC situations. Just sit still for a while, don't move your optics (mainly for LMGs w/ scopes) and then fire. The average time it takes to settle is about 2-4 seconds IIRC. Most weapons can be deadly accurate once you have settled. Just remember, you fire most accurately when sitting still.

Welcome to the forums :) . You have to remember that this is not a simulation of you firing a weapon a range with constant stable conditions. You have to account for the adrenaline, breathing and other various factors of combat, which would greatly affect your aim and putting rounds on target.

When I use the MG3 Deployed and in prone for a good 8 seconds and shoot in bursts of 3, I'm better off using a pistol. I find the deviation in this game ridiculous sometimes.

The iron sight weapons don't give me much deviation trouble.

Every soldier in PR would have failed their respective army entrance test for fitness and shooting. But I guess the ability to pilot every vehicle would be a big plus. Maybe that's why they let them into the army?

thats because we've all been conditioned by games like MW2 :P

I do have to admit that i sometimes get frustrated with the deviation levels in PR, but I delieve that (and I could be wrong) the deviation is a simple replacement for the "scope drift" that is seen in many other games. Maybe in the future the devs could switch it to scope drift, as that would obviously be much more realistic. For now, as long as the "settle times" are realistic, they should not be changed.

If settle times were swapped out for scope drift, then they could take in to account (visibly) for heavy breathing after sprinting or being shot, which would in turn affect how steadily you could hold your gun. Then they could add a "hold breath" feature for more accurate shots as well.

Also, I have a question, are the settle times effected by your stance? Settle times while prone would be almost did nill...

It's been said elsewhere that realistic scope drift is not possible in the BF2 engine. It'd either be the same animation every time (both in choreography and in time to stabilize) regardless of how much or little you had been moving prior to aiming, or the animation would be simply a visual disruption with no actual affect on accuracy (i.e. the centre of the screen would be 100% accurate during sway, regardless of where the reticle was at the time).

I am personally a horrible shot in PR, and I know the frustration you speak of. I'm slowly getting better by taking an M4 with optics out in single player and shooting some target practice after a short jog. I try to do this most times before deploying to a live server. No-pressure situations help me learn to feel how long the deviation is, and my hope is to one day be able to 'feel' the deviation consistently without giving it any conscious thought, as I would need to do while under fire online. Time will tell how well it works for me.

Go load up ARMA/ARMA2. You could agree that it is a realistic game.

Now, sprint for about 30 seconds, aim down your sights, and fire.

Every bullet will not hit where you intended to aim, because your aim is not steady. However, they will hit where your sight was pointed, because thats how it works in real life, and in ARMA.

Now, do the same thing in PR. You sprint for 30 seconds, aim down your sights, and fire. You will not hit where you were intending, even though your aiming device tells you otherwise. The DEV team (or any team, for that matter) cannot mod BF2 so that there is real "Weapon Sway" Like in ARMA.

Think of it this way. Aiming down the sight is actually a lie. It will not tell you where the bullet is going to hit if you shoot right away, it only tells you where the bullet will hit once you are settled.

Alternatively, Crouch near a corner for about 5 seconds. Crouch-walk scoped in around the corner, and fire. Your deviation should be very low.

Neither do the Red dot sights.

Personally, I love the deviation system.

Nothing is as intense as staring down the scope of your rifle at an enemy staring right back at you, both waiting for their deviation to settle, both not wanting to be the one who got their shot off a little to late...

I think it makes for good game play.

I think we can all agree that we hate the deviation system, but it's necessary to balance the gameplay and make it slower.
