Markers on 3D map
Would it be possible for grenade trap and vehicle mine markers to show up on the 3D map like observe markers? It would prevent team kills by mines. Would this also be possible with transportation request markers placed by squad leaders to show up on helicopter pilots HUDs? It can be hard to land close to a squad if your squad leader cannot place a move marker on where you need to go.

Re: Markers on 3D map
I don't think this will happen solely on the purpose of reality. In reality, there are mine markers. yes, but they only show the general position of mines and are not exact. Plus this would only be on the paper map (i.e minimap) If you remember from Vanilla BF2, you placed a mine or C4 and the marker appeared 3D above them. What that implies is that the infantry that can see the mine has some sort of Heads Up Display, that is integrated into say goggles. Since that hasn't been in development for some time and isn't integrated into any present day military forces (that I know of) it is therefore impossible to see those markers in the HUD. Therefore no, it most likely won't happen

Good idea, in reality you would know where your teams mines are and this would help out and avoid alot of TKs

well in reality, there wouldn't be anyone in the vicinity of the mines unless they were engineers deploying them. Once mines are deployed the area is considered a hazardous route and therefore, no one would go there. My point is that the current system works well, IF you're paying attention and looking at the map. I mean you have to watch where you are going all the time, not just for mines. Also in reality, there are so many ordances placed that I doubt the taliban / insurgents actually know where they all are. We are already being leniante enough since the mines cannot be placed underground. WHERE they are usually placed

what is next? bring back the crosshair?
no IRL you have map where your team's mine fields are marked. There is no 3D marker shows its exact location with a meter indicator.Smiddey723 wrote:Good idea, in reality you would know where your teams mines are and this would help out and avoid alot of TKs

In reality, you would know where mines were placed beforehand, no matter what army you are. Unless yourarmy doesn't like telling you there's mines where your heading.. >>
There's a difference between required reality, and gameplay-oriented reality.
Required reality, obviously, is accurate to real-time data, such as US isn't equipped with M4A1's with heartbeat sensors and silencers.
Gameplay-Oriented reality is making things realistic. It's not 100% accurate in all forms, but it helps gameplay along, and "acts" on something that we cannot do effectively in the engine.
Such as, vehicles "Spawn" out of thin air because we can't have some sort of transporting vehicles to the battlefield.. system.. that I know of anyway. Or that the dev team can make work effectively.
Having 3D map markers are like visual cues to tell you where mines are would be effective, and semi-realistic. Because you'd know, in real life, where mines would be placed.
It's exactly the same as having a gauge and numbers tells you how much ammo you have. You could argue "lol in raelity numbers don't appear so remove how many magazines you have". However, in real life, you can visually count how many. Which.. you can't do that in PR.
I say, please add this. This will save hundreds of mine and grenade trap teamkills.

Re: Markers on 3D map
Ever notice how if you crawl through a grenade trap you'll see the icon show up? That's because they can't actually remove it like they'd like to so they decrease the draw distance to zero.
What you are all asking for is a 'nilla BF2 feature that was intentionally removed.

Or changed the settings so that they aren't completely removed.. Maybe have them only visible within 10m?

Re: Markers on 3D map
Realistic setting is no marker at all, unless you were part of the team of engineers who placed them you wouldn't know exactly where they are. As has already been stated, mind fields are almost always marked as such on maps and in some cases clearly signed on the battlefield.
If you don't communicate with your team/squad the location of solider planted mines ie. IEDs, Grenade Traps, Claymores etc. then that is your fault. If you are not cautious enough when moving through an area that is marked for mines and hit one, that is your fault.

Re: Markers on 3D map
Actually even right now it is not totally realistic due to both engine restrictions + "game play>reality" motto. Think about mines really covered with terrain textures or digged in like they are in real life.

Re: Markers on 3D map
When you join a server, markers only render once they are newly placed. Old markers from before you've joined the server cannot be seen.
Since you can't efficiently mark things on the map, the only way to mark them is to either put a mine marker in the game world, or add some sort of "flag" weapon that you could drop like a grenade trap that marks mines.

Re: Markers on 3D map
It's probably hardcoded, but I'd prefer to just have every single mine be marked automatically on the main map. They could use smaller markers (just a 0.5cm red square) to stop the entire map turning red.
