Convincing Friends To Play PR
I have a couple of very good friends who I love playing games with over Xbox Live. They love military shooters, and every weekend night, we get on and play Modern Warfare 2 for hours and have a great time.
However, I'm getting sick of how they only play Modern Warfare 2. MW2 is extremely broken and unrealistic, and it's not the kind of game I enjoy anymore compared to much more fun games like Project Reality.
So I tried convincing one of my friends to try out Project Reality. He already plays WoW so he has a gaming-ready PC that is more than capable of running PR. I told him about all the great things about PR, but he's not that open minded and is reluctant to try the game. He said that he could experience a modern-themed shooter in Modern Warfare 2 and perform teamwork in Call of Duty with his friends without the hassle of Project Reality.
But he doesn't get how fundamentally PR is different from MW2. He finally watched some gameplay footage and complained about how big the maps are, and how much there's no action. He did say that PR looked like a good game, but he said that he wasn't sold enough to go and install PR.
On the flip side, I love extremely huge maps, and I love lulls that give you a sense of realism before an intense firefight.
One of my other friends loved watching me play Project Reality, and praised how great the game was. He's probably going to be the first of the Modern Warfare 2 crew to switch over to playing PR. His brother is an avid PC Gamer who owns a copy of BF2 and has a beautiful rig with a pair of extremely nice gaming headphones. However, it's unfortunate that his brother is also extremely protective of his stuff and restricts my friend from touching his PC.
Anyway, how do you think I can convince my MW2 quick-scope loving friends to switch over to Project Reality?

You simply, might not be able to. Its not for everyone and if they dont like it, they dont like it.Quikli wrote: Anyway, how do you think I can convince my MW2 quick-scope loving friends to switch over to Project Reality?

Re: Convincing Friends To Play PR
I converted my friends by simply playing it while we were having a LAN-party... needless to say, they were like 'wow that looks awesome.' You might not have that chance, but it worked well for me, and if they don't like what they see that they are probably not suited to the game.

yes PR is a game for the minority of populations,
it lacks aciton, and it sucks sometimes.
but i love it, i love it because of tatics. but some teamwork maniacs to see the game like me makes i have a boring feeling about it.
i just loved alot, and loved whicht faults, the older PRs, of 0.85 and 0.86. they enforced teamwork, and view of agressive estrategy of war much more that the newers how are defensive. i hate play defensive, and belive me, no one says nothing agaist 0.85, and 0.86 in the times of today. to me it's the best version of PR!.

MW2 = fiction...basically quake with the accuracy of robots shooting lasers, just with skins to appear like they are real weapons.
Project Reality = reality.
Tell him if he doesn't understand that he's just an Xbox live kiddie.

PR doesn't fit all players. Some don't like it slow, some like to lonewolf ala MW2. But if they like being part of a group and have divirsity (like tanks, choppers, jets, boats etc) this might be a game they should check out. If they have vBF2 on a DVD tell them there is no reason NOT to try it for a couple of hours.
Show them some more trailers and gameplay footage with mumble in it.

Re: Convincing Friends To Play PR
I just generally told my friends that they should get BF2 and play pr after having some fun trying to play it two player (I.e one person moving, other shooting/ looking) It'll be a good way to get them used to the teamwork xD. But generally, just get them to play a few games, make sure you get them a mic (if they don't already) and try to join more full servers, and don't go too hard on them

It's hard to explain to some people how amazing this game is, most of them just don't get it. The ordinary FPS player needs to hear an explosion every 15 secs and to shoot someone in the face every 5 secs or they get bored. It took me months to get my brother to try this game and he actually liked it at first, but got bored a couple days later...

This;

OT:
PR is, like thompson said, a game meant to be not for everyone to play.
I know alot of these noobs that play these mainstream fps games like Counter Strike and Call of Duty ( though the first and the second one were not that bad ). Like for example; I don't like ArmA 2 that much just because of the cheap animations and sounds while PR was a 'love at first sight'. Maybe try to stop playing MW2 and convience atleast one of them, the other will follow. ( that's what I suppose )

Re: Convincing Friends To Play PR
I gave this up long ago. I tried to explain what deviation was to my non PR fps friends, and they pretty much laughed at me.
??:
Oh well...I was here before deviation and will be here long afterward. PR is too slow for most people, and the maps are too big. They cannot appreciate the subtleties of the game; the calms before storms, following orders, the accurate weapon, vehicle, and troop details...etc...

Convince 'em with all the cool toys initially. Then show them the real gameplay.

Re: Convincing Friends To Play PR
What I've learned is that different people have different views on some things:
1) What is fun.
2) What teamwork is.
Yes, some only think fun is getting non-stop action. Others (like most of us here) enjoy the other parts, like all the preparation and working with your squad and team.
That takes you to teamwork, and he said he can get teamwork by playing MW2 with his friends. What he's calling teamwork is yelling enemy contact locations after he dies. Or saying things like, I will go to the left, you go to the right. That's about it. There's no dependence on other players for him to do his part.
That dependence is what makes PR great imo, and what also can make a lot of games go bad. But I think the balance of great things vs. bad things make us keep playing, because it's hard to get the great things we have in PR in other games.
I gave up trying to convince people, unless they ask. I just accept there are different people out there that enjoy different things. I record my PR gameplay videos and hopefully that helped people get an idea of what PR is about.

Re: Convincing Friends To Play PR
as they say, the mod is not for everyone. but if you can convince him to try it, just once useing your PC, he'll be hooked. even if the round sucks and he ragequits. he'll go home thinking about how much that game sucked, but then he'll start to wonder "ok, that one round sucked, but what would it be like if it hadnt?" Although i honestly thing that after he walks around for 10 minutes and then hits his first firefight, he'll be hooked.
the really hard part is going to be convincing them to be infantry and not teh uber 1337 pilot or tanker.

Futball is only awesome sometimes too, but then its really awesome and people sit through all the bad games waiting for the good one. Except Americans.HAAN4 wrote:yes PR is a game for the minority of populations,
