Model M Mechanical Keyboard

Post by Tofurkeymeister »

Just bought a refurbished 1397599 Model M from ebay for $40 after shipping :D . Can't wait for it to come in.

It was manufactured in 1994, and as such only 1 year younger than me.

The Model M is a buckling spring mechanical keyboard, so the key actuates like so:

Impressions:

I must say, it is a unique typing experience to hear the clanging and clicking of springs while you type. While the typing experience is nice, I'm not enough of a WPM demon to be completely floored. That being said, the keyboard is built like a tank and has this whole retro feel, and is fun to type on. I'll definitely hang on to this keyboard for a while.

P.S. I definitely like it better than my old Gateway membrane keyboard

hehe

I remember when those keyboards were "new." :) First "real" PC for me was in about 1990 when my girlfriend became an on-campus IBM rep. IIRC it was a PS/2 that ran Windows 2.0. Kinda funny to hear people wax nostalgic about it. I can clearly hear the tic of the keys in my memory, though.

I would wax nostalgic, but I'm only 17 :D . The keyboard is only 1 year younger than me...

The best keyboard is the one you don't leave at home when going to a LAN party, or the spare-one you take with you for the person that has forgotten their one.

For real fun try replacing all the keys on those scissor-laptop keyboards.
