A Call For Video Tutorials

Post by ytman »

Suggestion: A community effort to create detailed and easy to understand video tutorials on how to play the game. The video tutorials should be supported by the Realitymod website and accessible from there.

Reason: The jump from .8x to .9x has brought a large amount of gameplay changes to a game that is already more complex than most. There is a manual/guide given to the player upon download, but however, that isn't always accessible or quick for certain people.

Such video tutorials could also help promote the games 'cooler' aspects such as calling in a JDam on a tank or bunker and serve as a 'propaganda' machine.

Theoretical Results: A more informed player base and beyond that a better team oriented experience.

Requirements: Spare time, a video editor, a monitor and microphone, sponsored webspace (at least a youtube embed).

Lets do it! I know people have tried before in previous versions and stuff but we could definately make it better organised and publicised...

I started a series of videos a while back that were how-tos about logistics trucks.

YouTube - startrekern's Channel

Requirement for any kind of video tutorials is some sort of uniform intro/exit credits. Will there be voices describing how things work, or simple text dialogue? Questions that have to be considered

It's not too hard to find a friendly voice to explain things is it? :P

I think it would be an excellent idea.

Brilliant idea - But what needs to be done to separate it from the pre-existing flood of youtube videos of PR gameplay is to link or embed the series on this website. Easily-digestible tutorials in brief, 60 second long increments is what I'm seeing. If not, I'd be afraid they got lost in the spider web of links on youtube.

[R-DEV]OkitaMakoto:"Cheers, you're the man, Okita"
[R-DEV]Rhino:"I in fact got kicked from a server for tking."
Hitperson:"well done, treasure it forever."
[R-DEV]Adriaan:"Damned classy Roma, if I may say so."
[R-DEV]Chuc:"Pro man, pro."
(yes, it was about me)
[R-MOD]BloodBane611:"Romagnolo, you definitely deserve a LOL award for that."

Can someone make a tutorial video how to call in CAS? Explain the difference between cannons, LGM, missiles etc

And how to properly marked enemies infantry by squad leader's radio because I've always missed it by 100 meters off

The trick with the markers is selecting the right distance in 50 meter increments, getting yourself aligned, and then MOVING as you're setting the marker, that is W or S at the same time as you're putting the marker up. That will get it spot on.
This is because the marker appears in the direction that your body is pointing, and not your weapon, or so I've heard. In any case, it fixes the problem.

Until 0.92 comes out we can get a list of needed things written down.

Also its much better if someone is talking not just text on the screen.

And yeah, split in smaller parts so the guy wont have to skip through the whole vid just to get that part on how to mark a mine.

I like five minutes. Thats short enough to not be overwhelming yet long enough to get the basics across.

The Tutorials Should be seperated into three categories; Basics (and Basic Leading), Vehicles, Tactics.

Simply enough the basics are how the game opperates. Explain FOs and Logistics, Deviation, Kits/weapons and how and when to use them, joining squads based on names, naming squads, and game mode rules to name a few. These are the most basic ones and should be done first. Only really require minimal ingame presentation but should have some visuals to aid in the learning process.

Beyond that are vehicles, of which is more specific and could maybe require 1 per every 2/3 similiar vehicles. Split up between the IFVs, MBTs, APCs, Fixed and Rotary Winged. With FLIR possibly comming up with .92 this should wait.

Tactics are more complex and would require quite alot of editing and planing. Perhaps even staging of at least a squad or the use of a BR round.

Ahem:

I've made a few vids on squad leading and all that jazz and a similarly lengthy guide on playing medic. See my channel.

I also have plans for a comprehensive guide on every AT device e.g. HAt/LAT, TOW mines etc My problem is trying to put just the right amount of info in there, not too little or too much.

If you guys want to do something a little more official give me a shout. I'd love to help.

I think its a great idea, although if your going to try to make it official then you should leave out any form of tactics and just stick with the facts.
Also how do you plan to keep this up to date with every release? I believe the shorter the videos the easier it will be to replace redundant infomation/videos.
