Map crash with high textures

Post by zephyr89s »

I took the advice of a fellow PR player and tried putting my textures on medium to fix the CTD issue I had with Dragonfly and the new Burning Sands beta. It worked, but I am kind of bummed out because the difference is quite noticeable 30m and closer, and with all of the rich visual goodness that is expected in .92, I just wanted to inquire to the community on the progress of fixing this.

Has anyone Identified why these maps crash for some using high textures? Are there any fixes we know of other than simply lowering the texture setting?

Edit: It seems so weird that Jabal 2 is fine for me on high textures, but Burning_Sands which is essentially the same map with a different layout crashes.

Perhaps this is a self-issue?

What are your computer specs like? I did a test on high settings and found the Video Memory usage peaked at about 580MB on Kashan, this could complicate things if you have a 512MB graphics card.

I've also had issues on high settings, consecutive map loads seem to cause CTDs. I think it's a memory issue, I'm not sure bf2 gives back all of the memory immediately on a new map load.

Its because PR uses more than 2GB of ram on high textures thus causing a crash because you have no more physical memory to allocate to BF2. Kinda annoying how a game that once required 512mb of ram now requires upwards of 3GB to play on high. Tho PR is the only mod I crash with. Seems like something might be using more memory then it should be.

It is sort of ridiculous that PR can use up to 80% of my 4 GB of RAM. :/

BF2 was rated for what? 512MB?

A lot of other mods (FH2, EoD) has as much high quality, exclusive content that PR does, but they don't use near as much memory. I think some better optimization is in order. :/

I do have 512 on my 9800gt, but It has never been a problem with any game, or any other map on any other BF2 mod save Dragonfly and Burning Sands. I can run crysis on medium high settings, @40-50 fps and just for fun I maxed out everything on crysis. It ran as slow as ****, but It did not crash, or seize up.

I really don't think my computer has some special code that your's don't that says

<CTD> /PRMOD: Burning_Sands Dragonfly </CTD>

or something to that effect. I have asked around, and there are a lot of people that have had to decrease texture settings to prevent crashes. I even had a bug report on it in this forum, and dozens of people responded with the same problem as I.

Edit: I as well have 4 gigs of system ram, pc6400.

Maps in general are much larger, with much denser distributions of trees/statics - PR does have more assets per faction if you include all the 1p weapons and deployables etc. Though I can't think of what is taking up quite so much memory, 2GB seems pretty bloated. Perhaps some streamlining is in order.

It was fallujah which is 1km^2 while its detailed its not so detailed that it should use 100% of my memory. Also Kashan which is larger, but regardless, 2GB should be plenty.

I don't know what my problem is :( I can't run it on high since .9

Then again, i have 3Gb of Ram and 1gb of texture ram. =/

You have to also realize it's not just textures now.

You have pretty hi-def textures, a lot of them, with new bumpmaps, as well as a completely overhauled sound system, plus all the checks the game does to make sure it's played properly:

Then you have to add all the new crazy features, the bunker/asset placement, localized fixes, increased view distance, increased polygons, increased map size

That plus the included use of x-fi on pretty much everything (Echos in building) added to the amount of grass, then add some more trees, more detailed/prolonged explosions, better physics, more people in one direct area, more detailed environments, more background/backdrop noise.

....o_o that 2gb actually makes sense. ^_^ Specially if you think about sounds. Sounds take up a lot of memory and cpu-usage. And for some reason makes my X-Fi bluescreen T_T D:

No it doesn't make any sense. My CPU hardly peaks 25% for one and the OP has 4GB of ram and cant play on High Textures, Which is ridiculous there is a obvious bug here.

Wow, I was not expecting these responses. I was inquiring as to the progress of a solution, not to debate the existence of the problem. Does anyone have good info regarding this?

Hmm, try this program
Mz Ram Booster

It was recommended by a dev a while back (https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f10-pr ... ost1286677). It seems to reduce the number of times I CTD on map load so it should be worth a try.

99.9% chance the problem is that your PC is simply running out of memory to load everything and when it exceeds the amount of memory you have available in your PC it crashes.

Jabal 2 dosen't have lightmaps last time I checked meaning that its memory usage would be significantly less than a map with lightmaps.
