Dutch Forces: Raid at Dawn

Post by Glimmerman »

Name: Raid at Dawn
Factions: Netherlands vs Taliban
Size: 1km
Location: Chora valley, Afghanistan.

It has been years since we posted new information about the first map thats being created by our own
[R-DEV]AfterDune, so to make up for that, we created a nice little video and some fresh screenshots on what it looks like these days.

It's still work in progress and not finished yet. We know about the lines around the trees, that'll get fixed later. Also the updated parts of the map aren't entirely lightmapped yet.

Minimap so far:

Edit: The map has been updated again. There are more compounds and houses on the map now. FOB Mirwais has also been upgraded, it's bigger now.

Lookin' good. 1km Insurgency maps with little vehicles are the way to go tbh.

Looking awesome! Can't wait to try it out. Also, if I'm not completely mistaken, we will get new, more visible grid alphabetics and numbers?

It's not yet decided if this will be Insurgency or AAS, a good playtest should give us a better idea of that.

This minimap has more visible grid and numbers already if you ask me. I've made them way more clear than the default setting.

That was in ancient times :p . You wouldn't recognize the map anymore :p .

(for others: the Apache is NOT in this map)

Nothing wrong with having both :)

Looks really nice! It could use a little more compounds if you ask me. (Maybe in the H9 area?)
make sure all corners of the map are interesting to fight.
In Uruzgan (well just like most province in Afghanistan) you find allot of field's with small ditches and tree lines.

It does slighter remind me of the area where the zulu 911 firefight was.. we had a incident with a suicide bomber next to the same compound.

(Irc its one of these 2 compounds just across the river crossing at the entrench of the Baluchi valley.)

maybe a good inspiration?

Is still with the unique AAS4?
I remember some old info that Raid at Dawn had a new version of AAS where the Opfor flags are around the compound and the main dutch flag was in the middle. Or has that all been changed as well?

Also, wasn't this 2km before?

-edit-
This map was originally based on a true story. Over time, things have changed a lot though.
Disappointed that this has been changed. :(

This minimap isnt that actual anymore, perhaps AfterDune can upload a better one, around the edges of the map soem buildings with fields have been added allready, the video represents the current situation since i recorded it yesterday.

No it has allways been 1 km.

Dont be disappointed, the special AAS layer is still there, it still not playtested on a large scale.

As the map has improved incredibly since we first showed it off 2 years ago, the old verison only had a few compounds, the mountain, river and a lot of open deserts.

The current map is way more realistic to the 09:11 Zulu story.

I found an online .dds to .jpg converter :D . I've updated the OP.

The minimap I just posted has some unlightmapped stuff in it, as you can see, but you get a better idea of where the compounds are. Too bad you don't see the compound walls on the map that well...

Then what exactly has been changed? Because that quote sounds more like:
"It was originally based on a true event, but we changed it to a more fictional event"

The event it was based on was not based on true looking terrain, it was based on the Dutch getting ambushed from 180 degrees, this concept is still there, we just imporved on the terrain.

I cant tell exactly what has been added but a lot more compounds, fields, hills, roads, rocks and ditches have been added.

The map itself is still based on the true event, but the Dutch no longer start in the compound. Instead they get a little outpost called "FOB Mirwais". Taliban can come from anywhere, all spawnpoints are random (goes for both AAS and Insurgency).

I don't know when you last saw the map, but that was probably ages ago. Errrrm, the changes:
- Added FOB Mirwais
- Replaced old fields with new fields ("clumps")
- Added more fields
- Added more fields again
- Replaced old Iraqi-style compounds with Afghanistanized ones
- Added more compounds
- Added way more ambient sounds
- The whole south-western part of the map got more hills, this was very flat back then
- The White Compound is totally different than how you remember it
- The Taliban HQ (hilltop) is totally different as well
- The north-eastern part has compounds now, instead of nothingness with lame camo-netting
- There are way more roads now

That's about it I guess.
