Let me be the first to welcome you to the PR community. The info you are looking for is in the manual. The link was placed on your desktop when you installed. Please read it and practice on a co-op server before trying to fly on a real server.

You walk up to the copter and hold T. Click request kit and chose pilot. You can't request kits everywhere though.
The glass is neither half empty nor half full, it's just twice the size it needed to be.

You need to join a squad or make a squad first to be able to use the T button (to select kits)

Hopefully you read the manual before playing in an actual server.

Good luck with flying and welcome to PR.

And don't take any aircraft in an online server if you're not in a dedicated squad for it and are allowed to. These things take ages to respawn, cost your team a large amount of tickets if destroyed, and are needed to perform important tasks all the time.

Anyhow: Welcome to PR and the forums! Learning curve might be steep, but once you're a bit experienced, you'll have loads of fun :)
