Are the spanners outdated?

Post by hobbnob »

Now I'm not an MA so I really have no idea on this, the most I've done is sat in the Warrior and scimitar lol.
My question is this, BF2 has had the humble spanner since it's release, as has PR. But surely with new technology being produced a whole vehicle cannot be repaired using a simple spanner? I realise that some things have to be 'imagined' (arresting of civis for example) but surely it's possible to replace it with something?
So that's why I made this thread, for the community to decide what could/should replace the spanner? IMO it's on the same level as the defib's. it was in vannila because it looked good, not because it was realistic.

Spanners still repair light vehicles (jeeps) if I recall correctly. Think it more of a representation of a toolbox rather than just a wrench imo.

then why not have a toolbox? Sure the texturing might be a bugger to do and the animation will have to be thought about but the modelling can't be that tricky?

Does it even repair anything anymore? I recall the manual stating it can only defuse explosives now.

Your probably right it is outdated, but i seriously doubt anyone is going to make a whole new spanner(wrench if your american) for very little gain as the spanner is almost redundant iirc its only job is disarming mines

Well the epipen will be infinitely more common than your standard wrench on the battlefield. Maybe two people on each team will be using a wrench, but any infantry squad, or IFV/APC squad will probably be running a medic.

How much an asset is used isn't important IMO, PR strives for realism and authenticity and they've got people running round hitting IED's with bloody spanners!

What would you have replace the spanner though?

You need something to remove mines,

You need a tool to repair light vehicles. The wrench covers both now, but what would you replace it with.

How about wire cutters? They can be used irl to make simple wiring adjustments to light vehicles or cut a critical circuit wire in an IED

Plans to replace the wrench with some needle nose pliers or equivalent is on the plan... but extremely low priority.

I really think there needs to be more that can remove mines. Not completely on topic but an issue.
Maybe a specialist or something, because mines are a LOT more common than combat engies and a lot of times insurgents spam mines.

Communist, if yo uhave a suggestion then wait until the suggestion forums get reopened, this is a discussion thread about whether the spanner is outdated, not a suggestion thread.

Back on topic, it's good to know the devs realise this is outdated, a shame it has such a low priority though, I haven't heard about anything bigger on the forums that I know of apart from separate factions.

Ye I'm pretty sure that's correct, just used for picking up mines etc. We could replace it but its pretty damn low priority.

i like the wrench, even though it's not used for much. there isnt much to replace it with, unless reapiring vehicles manually gets faded out completly.

Hummers, Trucks, BRDM's, VN3's, haven't tried other light vehicles like the MTLB but one would expect it doesn't repair it.
