AC-130 WITH Reasonable Comments

Post by VoodooActual »

Hello, I've come to add my little idea, and wondered if you reckon it's implementable. I Honestly dont know if it's the right section - The 'Suggestions' is down, And I was hoping for a discussion.

Basically, I'd love a AC-130 Spectre/Spooky to be Implemented into SOME maps. Now, Dont be thinking 'FFS SUP3R Pl4N3Z Wit T3h BiG Howwetzirs!??.. No WAIZ'. No, This isn't a two map operation. OH NO.

It'd take A FULL squad to operate it. (In Real life, It's 13-14 but.. For the ease of PR, I've shortened it down)

It'd consist of -

Pilot (Flies the Aircraft)
Navigator (The Squad Leader, Relocates information to the Pilot from ground forces, Helps co-ordinate the attacks)
3 Gunners (One for the GAU-8, One for the 20mm, One for the Howitzer)
Electronic Warfare Officer (Views a small radar, Seeing incoming Lock-Ons and Enemy AA positions. He Controls Chaff, And generally keeps the AC-130 from being hit by enemy Ordinance)

Without One, The AC-130 would fail horrendously. If you're thinking 'This seems REALLY unfair to anyone who Isn't US' But.. In reality, it Isnt. Heres a list.

Pros -
Immense Firepower and Vision
Can destroy enemy positions from a fair distance
Very good for CAS where a Jet wouldn't succeed
Can stay over one area longer than normal CAS can

Cons -
CANNOT fly safely in Day-time, Mainly used on Night-time Operations.
Stupendously slow, Packs a punch but takes 15 Minutes + to fly from One Homebase to the other
Takes 5-10 Minutes for a FULL Re-load.
Without Flares, It's a moving tin can. The only countermeasures are Chaff.
Needs a full crew to be at 100% efficiency

There Are many more, But for the purposes of PR.. I think It could work.

Hate/Rate?

EDIT - Also forgot to mention - I Know this would be reasonably hard to code into, But.. Desert Combat in 1942 had a C-130 (Transport Variant) So.. With the amazing amount of changes you've made to vBF2, It wouldn't suprise me if you could do it stunningly :D

first of all, welcome to the forums.

secondly this has been discussed to death in the suggestions forum (where this should be) but post release the forums are closed to allow people to play the game before resuming suggestions of randoms stuff.

and lastly as a "newbie" you have to have 25 posts to post a suggestion and you need to make sure you check the "already suggested suggestions" thread before posting up something because chances are good that it has been discussed before.

I honestly like the idea and would like to see some discussion stem from this. :)

Assuming this won't get locked... Also assuming this somehow (excuse my extreme cynicism) has a chance of being implemented and gets past all the overshadowing issues such as player count, mapsize, view distance, hardcoded-ness, overpowered factions etc etc

Discussion wise; what could this bring to PR that everything else already ingame cannot.

I suppose another question is; How often are these types of gunships actually used in typical frontline operations which PR is meant to mimic.

id rather see a c-130 hercules that can airdrop crates than a spooky, but i dunno. i like the part about having a whole squad to operate it, but that takes too many away from the battlefield. a hercules could maybe hold as many as possible, but only paratroopers would be in it with the pilot

I would like to see this, just because of its great CAS platform... but i belive i read once that the AC-130 flight pattren around a target is to large for PR's maps. For example, if it was on Kashan, it would only beable to hit the middle of the map while sticking to the edges of the map. Also attack helis, jets, AAV, and even little birds could kill it realitivly quickly (slow moving+large silloete+large target=anything not in your sights will kill you). also, you only have 32 people per team. If you add this and only take away the attack heli, thats anouther 4 people that would have been running logistics, being infantry, crewing armor, or spoting for you.

And thats my two cents.

D-con mod had an AC-130 though didnt get to play it much since the mod was buggy. I fail to see the use of this as we have other things (apache, a-10) that does its role in the game. Your suggestion is take too many people to operate it, and takes players away from the battlefield. Also the reason why we don't have tank loaders or require copilots to fly something.

and the AC-130 does not carry a GAU-8, that would be ridiculous

43 In Services, Between Spooky/Spectre. They ARE actually used on front time ops, Not on every single raid, But If it's a Twilight hour, They are made use of. Like I said, Night-time maps would be made for this.. It's the only plausible option. I'm not asking to replace Jets on Kashan for these.

It WOULDN'T Be OP. it's like anything, Apache's are over-powered with a good crew. If 6 Noobs who've just ventured off CoD Get in it and manage to fly it, They'll get no-where. If you wanted to go indepth, You can feature Bullet Drop and Inaccuracy - The things aren't pin-point.

Yeah, It would be unfair, If you've got no AA, No AA Kits, And No form of jets up. They're slow as hell are AC-130's, and Attack GROUND targets. For Instance, an A-10 Warthog (Hypothetically) would destroy an AC-130 immensely quickly, Due to it's unreal amount of fire from the GAU-8.

And About the fairness - These things are used against the Taliban. I know it helps for a game, but.. War isn't fair. Theres NO WAY The Taliban can match the Air Superiority/Ground presence the US and the UK forces can. They know the terrain, and Have sources of movement. Thats what makes it fair.. War isn't fair, and NEVER Will be.

I dont understand how Player Count is an issue... One AC-130 Is enough Man-power for many ground troops, and They take alot of usage to be used effectively. It's the teams choice to run an AC-130 over another squad.

Could make an interesting CAS for levels (not as a vehicle). 25mm for Ground or light targets. 40mm for acp's and such and 105mm when you would want to call in the normal CAS jdam.

I thought one would be amazing in a Nighttime, US Vs Taliban Insurgency map, But yeah, I thought it was reasonable due to it being able to be shot down pretty easily, yet give so much firepower.

Also, not a huge problem, but a new runway for it to take of is probley needed.

just a random thought, wouldent this be a cool area attack? An area attack that has a short recharge to make up for its firing? One attack would have 3-4 shots from the howitzer, and maby 50-250 rounds from the GAU.

(i suppose gx already posted this...)

Because this thread has gone on much longer than it should have . . .

The chances of this ever be included in PR:BF2 are slim to none, and even less as a player operated vehicle.

1. Map limitations:
a. Distance: the turning radius would basically be half the map and to bring its weapons to bear it would be going in the same direction.
b. View distance / ceiling
c. No night maps.

An AC-130 would be ridiculously more vulnerable than it already is in real-life operating in those restrictions.

2. Team size limitations: 6 more people not able to be taking ground (pilot kits), two of which are in positions that serve little or no purpose in-game (EWO and Nav) and 6 more eggs in one ridiculously vulnerable basket, that every enemy will be shooting at with whatever they can get their hands on, to get blown up and lose tickets for their team.

Just to update you, the 25mm GAU-12 (Spooky) and 2 x 20mm Vulcans (Spectre) have been removed, so you're left with the 40mm and 105mm. They were looking at Bushmaster II to replace them and the Bofors, but they were deemed unsatisfactory after further evaluation.

Also, ultimately it is the pilot who controls the trigger on the aerial guns. The gunners prep the weapons to fire.
