Is a mic a necessity?

Post by jp0249107 »

Heyo all,

I've got my copy of the ultimate collection of BF2 on the way and I just had a question about the necesary use of a mic in this mod. I'm a big believer in teamwork, and while I've never been able to participate in a realism mod on a multiplayer level, I would love to take my chances here. My problem is that I can't use a mic right now nor anytime in the future because of my living conditions. I'm in a small dormroom (about the size of a walk-in closet), with a roomate, and with thin walls. Would I be able to play on this mod without drawing the ire of others or is it a taboo sorta thing? I have no problem following orders as I would love to be one of those grunts working together in a fireteam, I get all excited just thinking about it lol.

Thanks alot!

A mic isn't a necesity, but it does increase the amount of fun and playablity the mod has. Alot of people wont care that you dont have a mic so long as you play maturely and dont act like an Asshat/tard

Most people will shun you if you dont have a mic and try to-
-Crew for armour
-CAS (close air support)
-Squad lead
-command

So none micers are usually stuck to infantry duties. Which is still alot of fun. But no, a mic is not 100% required

Its not needed to play the game but its needed to play the game well and have fun, just buy one for like 10 bucks

Did you not read? he said he cant get a mic because he lives in a small dorm with a roomate.

Back to your question. The awnser is its not neccesary just tell your squad leader that you dont have one and say your new. Im sure hell understand, I know i would. Just try to communicate via text.

As foxxy said just tell your squad lead whats going on with text chat. If you don't know already that would be the J,K, and L keys (all chat, team chat, and squad chat respectively) as long as you follow orders and stay away from the jobs that require a high degree of communication like armor you should be fine.

Just be responsive and you can do just fine. If asked a direct question simply type it in chat and the SL will get the idea. To call out targets just say direction and guessed range ie. "Contacts NW 150m !!"

sorry to be the bad news guy but i strongly believe you need Comms to be effective in this game. i don't play it if i don't have em it's as simple as that, it's not fair on you or your other team mates. so be responsible get miked up, get on line and get playing. besides you don't need to be talking all the time, just relay the pertinent info and fulfill the role of a squad node like your supposed too, not some chattering numnuts COD twitching sackgrabber.

Well, if you're ever in my squad, you've got nothing to worry about. Like Spriggan said, just be responsive.

To be honest I can't understand your problem. Why can't you talk? You don't have to yell (at least most of the time ;] ).

Make sure you don't spam L chat, just use it sparingly so you don't get muted.

If they aren't reading what you're saying, join another squad.

I'm absolutely fine with taking on infantry duties, I'm not too experienced in vehicle combat nor particularly well at it either so that's not big loss for me or my random teammates haha. I'm glad I'll be able to enjoy this game too thanks for all the replies!

You certainly have the right attitude mate, which is gold as far as i'm concerned because othr people dont.

If you join a squad without a mic, and explain on joining why you don't have one, you will be far more useful and worthwhile than at least one other squad member (there is always one bad apple who is seemingly retarded).

That said, if you get a decent[ish] mic, you will fingers crossed be able to whisper stuff, and to be honest some squad members don't even use VOIP when they should do (i.e. 'THERE IS AN ENEMY AROUND THE CORNER'). So even whispering very infrequently will be better than them.

plus I'm not sure what keyboard you use, but mine is an old 'clicky' one, which is louder (and more annoying for my gf) than me talking/whispering!

As others have said, perhaps your room mate wouldn't mind. Certainly don't worry about thin walls and other rooms. You don't have to shout in PR, talking in a normal voice is perfectly OK, and I doubt that your dorm has a problem with regular conversation. So give the situation some consideration, we don't know what your room mate is like, but they might not mind you talking - comms in PR is usually about saying something once in a while, not talking constantly.

But overall, attitude's more important than having a mic. If you go mic-less but have a good attitude, you'll be a good squad member. Some squad leaders may kick you for being mic-less, but do not take that personally. Just do not squad lead without a mic, leadership roles in this game are the ones that absolutely require a mic.

Basic etiquette for texting in-game.

"J" is global chat. It's a good habit to avoid using it. It'll keep you from accidentally providing the enemy with intel. Continuously taunting players from the other team is generally frowned upon.
"K" is for information/requests that your team needs to see.
"L" is communication within your squad. It shows up in green so you know it immediately affects you and your squadies.

In general, making small talk over text means that important messages are possibly going by unseen. You may see admins warning people to clear the chat as the channel has been flooded.

The main drawback of not having a mic is the time delay. How are you going to type out to your squadies that there are enemies on your location and still defend yourself? You would probably be expected to take up a function in the squad which does not require lots of messaging. Medic is the 1st choice for people that don't have mics as they usually do not directly engage in combat.

When you buy a mic also buy your room-mate some ear plugs. Win win all round.

given your conditions i would not use a mic either. I've caught myself screaming before and buddy you do not want the guys in the next room wondering who Gary is, and what he's about to do to you.

don't worry, it's not at all necessary. It certainly helps, but not needed. As long as you stick to a job that doesn't require a lot of immediate communication you're good.

Don't join any squads that have the words "VOIP" in the name.

VOIP = Voice over internet protocol = voice chat

I only host VOIP squads, and kick those who don't have a mic.

Some squad leaders may kick you for being mic-less, but do not take that personally. Just do not squad lead without a mic, leadership roles in this game are the ones that absolutely require a mic.
+ 1

I've had great rounds squadleading people without mics, only difference is that they have to type quite a lot. "Nmy inf 210 degrees, by the red car", "nmy firebase A4kp5", "he's just around the w corner"- this information may save your squadmates or teammates lives. I just hate when some people who use mics don't name their contacts (things they're shooting at) - the game can get frustrating if you don't see the enemy but are taking effective fire for a while.
So, yeah, the key is the communication between people (with or without a mic).

One more thing: please don't play on mumble servers (PR servers that require the player to use voice communication programm "Mumble"). It's no use, because they'll kick you for not talking/using Mumble to talk (specific server rules). Btw, mumble let's you talk to/hear other teammates, not only squadmates. And logically - those [mumble] server are mostly inhibited by people who play PR the right way (teamwork, communication).

But now I usually kick people without mics, cause 98% of time they: 1) don't type, 2) doesn't ask for a rally, 3) have no interest in teamwork, 4) grab unneeded/unassigned kits, etc.

I was about to say he should kick roomates *** so hard he goes through the wall, to save money... but then others would complain probably. :(
