Second Hard Drive messed it all up.....

Post by ma21212 »

I just installed a second 640GB WD Caviar black hard drive in my system and when I turend it on, it didnt read from my original HHD and told me "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in...". So I unpluged my new Hard Drive and when I restarted the computer, it ran like normal, reading what I had on my original Hard Drive and I got to my Desktop no problem, but after a minute the monitor went to sleep (but computer was still on). This even happend when I was in BIOS and also when I was on the little OS system that my moboard has on it.

help.... me out plz.....

specs:
Windows 7
Asus P6X58D-E
I-7 930
ATI 5870
6GB Corsair Dominator

Things you could try:
  1. Double check all wire for proper connection (esp. power cords).
  2. Make sure all fans are spinning (if not this could really damage your system).
  3. In BIOS make sure to that both hdds are detected and that the old one is before the new one within the boot sequence.
  4. In BIOS you do not want to select "RAID" as drive setup ususally you would want to have either "IDE" or AHCI.
  5. Try connecting to a different port on the mainboard.
Your "little OS system that my moboard has on it" could be the RAID controller with which you can try to set up SATA-RAIDs. This is not advice. Unless you specifically know what RAID is and which kind you want do not set anything in there you might wipe your old drive.

What kind of HDD is your old drive (ATA/IDE or SATA)?

Thanks but I just fixed it the other day. I still dont know why the system kept restarting but I just reset the BIOS to defult and then reconnected the HHDs so that my OS version was on "SATA 5", while the second HHD was on "SATA 6" (I know you can chage it in BIOS but I didnt feel like it).

So at the end it was just a prioraty thing.... lol
