Ok recently been looking to buy myself a new PC. (I would upgrade, but i have the utterly un-upgradeable Dell XPS 710, with a BTX motherboard >.>)
But my main concern is the power supply, so many times have my friends pcs failed due to insufficient power supplies that have come with their systems pre-built.
I am looking to build my own, although will probably wait till Q2 2011, due to Nvidia's soon to be released 22nm graphics processors. And Sandy Bridge's i7-2600k.
But I have been looking at the 580GTX, as thats the highest spec gpu nvidia do for now(I will most likely go for the 680GTX when its out, unless its over ?400) and there are some places saying it will need 42Amps from the 12v supplies. Now I have searched for some PSU's and most offer 20A per 12V rail, or some are modular with a single rail at 70A(Corsair 850AX).
My main question being, does the Corsair's 12V rail split into lots of connections, meaning I can get the 6pin ad 8pin connectors from that 1 rail? and have enough power. And is there anything i'm missing out when looking at the 12V rail? (E.g does the CPU use part of it, or anything else). I have settled at 850Watts so the power isn't an issue, that covers the power needed ad room for overclocking.

Re: PSU confusion
a 10 second search on google, i found this. Can I use GTX580 SLI on an old nForce590i mobo? - Guru3D.com Forums

The most important thing that everyone seems to have missed due to jumping on the bottleneck you should get a 450 not a 580 bandwagon is you said your PSU has 4 x 6 pin pci-e plugs. The 580 needs a 8 and a 6 pin.
The ideal solution is get a new CPU and a 580 or 2. You will need another PSU as well. I am sure you can get some 6 - 8 pin adaptors but I am not sure how well those work.

Re: PSU confusion
Oh no, but im going to be replacing pretty much the whole thing, processor the lot. Then I'll sell on this PC probably. I always knew I could put a new GPU in, as it has a 750W psu already. (mine was the non SLI edition)
