Need help with intro to PR.

Post by ironcitycats »

Good morning folks, I installed PR for BF2 yesterday. Went out and bought BF2 on Steam just so I could get this mod. I'm a longtime fan of the BF franchise, but more importantly I loved the BF1942 and BFV mods. Project Reality seems like it's going to be 10x better than any other mod I've played.

That being said, I read the PR957 manual and it was informative. But wanted to get more in-depth help before I really dedicate more time to the game.

1. What's the best way to practice? Co-op mode with bots? or is there a way I can play by myself to learn vehicle and air functionality?

2. How necessary is a mic? If 2/3rds of the players online use a mic, I'll probably just buy one. (Dumb question, but would my Xbox headset/mic work on a PC?)

3. Do most people join a clan?

4. Any other good resources for learning squad/commander tactics?

5. Can't seem to find a vehicle/aircraft list. Not that it's important, was more curious as to see what platforms are most common on maps so I could familiarize myself with them first.

6. I see there are mortars, which seems cool. Was wondering if there was mobile artillery too i.e. MLRS etc.

Thanks for anyone that can help answer my questions and thanks PR for developing this mod, it looks ridiculous. :D

Practicing with Bots is always a good way to learn the game mechanics, just be aware that the vehicles off by themselves are designed for bots only

2. How necessary is a mic? If 2/3rds of the players online use a mic, I'll probably just buy one. (Dumb question, but would my Xbox headset/mic work on a PC?)
do it man, mic makes the game 100x better, you'll even make some friends

3. Do most people join a clan?
some do, some don't I used to be in a clan, but havent been for a couple of years

4. Any other good resources for learning squad/commander tactics?
various threads on these forums, but ingame experience is best, join a squad, say you're new, spawn rifleman and just learn by watching and learning, then doing later

6. I see there are mortars, which seems cool. Was wondering if there was mobile artillery too i.e. MLRS etc.
unfortunately no, the maps are too small for such player controlled assets. However artillery and JDAM strikes feature as a commander controlled ability called in from off map

Practice with people after you practice the basics in COOP, this will allow you to be able to actually shoot something rather than spray.

2. How necessary is a mic? If 2/3rds of the players online use a mic, I'll probably just buy one. (Dumb question, but would my Xbox headset/mic work on a PC?)
100% necessary. If you want to communicate to the effect of winning, get a mic. Even better, become a Mumble user (comes with install of PR, if you checked it). I have no idea about the Xbox mic, try it.

3. Do most people join a clan?
I would wager so, most if not all servers are owned by clans. If you want to join a clan, heres my run down.

TG - Hardcore motherfathers when it comes to reality, but more importantly, teamwork. However, some of their "reality" measures can become annoying and their cencorship of naughty words is quite annoying. Overall an enjoyable place to get my Tac on. Note, they are not a clan, but a community.

Hardcore - These guys are the biggest clan in PR and possibly the entire BF2 world. Their server I have found is the most popular PR server, and they usually always have admins. Good bunch of guys except when playing insurgency you might find that they destroy caches a little too easily.

CIA (my clan) - We simply want to push the boundaries of some conceptions of what is proper in gameplay and in social interaction. On our server we have many rules, but really only one, DO NOT DISRUPT GAMEPLAY. Yes this means anything we think, but that still leaves a great amount of room for you to do anything else. But what we are mostly proud of is our commitment to free-speech. Say what you wish but dont disrupt gameplay. Join us if you feel like a pothead-gamer, simply wanting to relax while playing. Though if we want to we can be some mean mother fathers in infantry (just dont ask the 508th PIR, were just out of practice guys)

Drama - I can only assume their is drama in all clans, but I can only speak for CIA, yes we have it, no it doesnt have to effect you.

No matter where you are, you experience what you make of the situation. For instance I played with a group of guys who were specifically anti clan but absolutely played well together and had boatloads of fun.

4. Any other good resources for learning squad/commander tactics?

Rudd got this one, these Fora, and experience will get you where you want.

5. Can't seem to find a vehicle/aircraft list. Not that it's important, was more curious as to see what platforms are most common on maps so I could familiarize myself with them first.

Make a local server and type in the chat "rcon prbot" I believe thats the command. This will allow you to move across the map with a birds eye view (use aircraft controls to control, tap the default "W" key to "sprint")

6. I see there are mortars, which seems cool. Was wondering if there was mobile artillery too i.e. MLRS etc.
Rudd got it

Thank you gentlemen, I appreciate the help. I will start playing with bots and do some training Smiddey recommended.

Apparently I can use my Xbox mic, just have to dowload the MS drivers.

Thanks also for the brief overview of the different clans. I consider myself 420-friendly, so CIA sounds about right after I get some training under my belt.

Also trying to d/l the Christmas map-pack too, it looks awesome.
See ya'll on the battlefield.

Another thing to do when you are in your first squad is to tell the squad leader that you are new to PR so he does not give you something complicated for you to do and they will most probably help you out a little to ;-)

About the Christmas map pack, nobody plays them maps anymore it was only over the christmas period they were played so downloading them might eb a waste of time. unless you just want to try them out of course :-D

Personally, I think joining a clan is the best way to go with PR. I tried PR on my own for a while but came to the conclusion that having a proper team to work with is best because you have the in-house training and experience to learn from.
