PR 0.957 - Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error - ftdisk.sys BSOD

Post by Officer_Dufus »

I keep getting BSODs (blue screen of deaths) while playing PR 0.957. Seems to happen equally in single player and multiplayer. I have deleted all aspects of Battlefield 2 including registry entries, all folders, and reinstalled and updated entirely, and also reinstalled Project Reality. Issue still remains.

I have all video options on high, 1024x768 resolution @ 60hz, AA = off, and also have audio on Xfi on High (not ultra High).

Running Windows XP 32bit, Sapphire X1950 XT, Creative Xfi Xtreme Music, AMD FX60, Asus A8N32 SLI motherboard, 850 watt Ultra power supply, 2 gigs ram.

I haven't played PR in about a year and a half, nothing has changed with the system though but these issues didn't exist with whatever revision of PR was released at that time, it has only seemed to start with this latest version.

Vanilla Battlefield 2 will not cause any sort of BSODs what so ever.

I have taken pics of the BSODs with my phone if needed, although I listed everything here.

Says KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR and then mentions ftdisk.sys at the bottom.

ALSO will sometimes get a different BSOD, saying PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA which also mentions NTFS.sys at the bottom of the BSOD page.

Any ideas on this? Any one else experiencing the same? Thanks!

hmmm.. sually this is a ram/pagefile error. either when you are playing PR.. PR is being such a Memory whore.. that your swapping to disk so much that your harddrive/ram fails. unlikely but possible. try increasing your page file size.

I do not have the virtual memory set, it is managed by the system. A long while ago I had it set for minimum and maximum as 1.5 x the amount of actual RAM but then since have changed it to be set and managed by the system, that would seem to be better overall I'd think....am I wrong? I know that is how XP presets the virtual memory anyway with a fresh install.

I just got another KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR, this time while playing vanilla BF2 on Kubra Dam, 29 people on 32 player server.

I was only in game for a few minutes, had not died or killed yet, so there was no respawn.

Seems like first map on multiplayer now takes very long to load, Not optimizing shaders because video settings were not changed, just takes forever to load map and then give you the ready button.

hmm.. check your drive for errors. chkdsk -f i believe in CMD. or you can schedule a disk check in administrative tools. This is either 1 of 2 things. Bad ram.. or your page file isnt operating as it should. increase page file and check your disk/defrag if you have to. Use defraggler as thats one of the best defragmentation tools out there.

There were more than a couple of times that when I got the BSOD while playing PR that Windows would automatically run disk check upon restart, in which it found nothing.

I have downloaded defraggler and will run that tonight. I just ran CC cleaner. My system is very clean, I run symantec antivirus, malwarebytes, spybot search & destroy, as well as the Windows defragmenter and O&O defrag.

I should probably run a memtest86 one night very soon as well.

When you say increase pagefile, what would you increase it to? I have 2 gigs of RAM, perhaps I should get more but I have the pagefile set on automatic.

I just had BF2 vanilla minimized to taskbar by "corrputed file" and Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Errors popping up which were entirely blank, no other text included. The corrupted file error went away with a click of the unnamed click box, and going back in game and connecting to another multiplay server since I had previously gotten kicked for idle (dealing with the error)

I reconnected to another server and upon completion of the map loading I was kicked back to desktop, this time another no-word Microsoft Visual C++ error box popped up again, closing BF2 entirely this time.

This was just after running ccleaner since my last post.

Well .. for the C++ problems.. the three following links should take care of that. You didnt give me a year so i gave you the 3 most important. If i were you i would DEFINITELY run a memtest. You have 2GB's of ram and your page file (a.k.a SWAP space) is what your computer uses when all of your availabe ram is being used. its much slower taht ram but it works. its probably about 2-4 gigs. increase it to at least 4-5 gigs. Also, if your using 7 or vista.. that uses at least 1 gb for the OS and PR LOVES to eat memory so its definitely a memory/disk problem. 1GB for games isnt much. i have 5 GB's of ram. my os uses 1.24gbs at all times usually. PR uses 2.1ish. so its demanding. also.. what settings are you playing at? And all of those antivirus programs. i hope your not using thos all at the same time . 0.0 Especially Symantec Norton Anti-Virus. BIGGEST RESOURCE WHORE in the name of Anti-virus. When you game.. Turn that OFF. To increase your page file.. here are the instructions.

Go to control panel>system and security>system
Click on advanced tab
In the performance section click on settings
Again click on Advanced > click on Change in the Virtual Memory section
Change the virtual memory [pagefile size]
restart your computer

The problem OP has is probably caused by the Creative X-Fi drivers. I have the exact same problem on my system if I set audio quality to the X-Fi -setting. However if I run it on Hardware/High it works fine for hours, but with 2d stereo sound and no EAX. Another way seems to be disconnect and reconnect after every map, so it's probably something with the X-Fi not being able to clear its memory.*

Unlike the OP I had the X-Fi working perfectly on Windows XP and I only have problems on W7. PR is the only mod that crashes and I can play vanilla or FH2 for hours without crashes, but PR crashes on the second map I load almost every time. BF2 is also the only game I've had any problems with, but it also has by far the best sounds in any game I've played (on Ultra High settings).

I hope this helps.

Edit: *=Just disconnecting doesn't seem to always work. Restarting the game after every map has been working the last few games though.

I know I'm 3 years behind, but apparently I never replied.

I believe the issue turned out to be a faulty SATA port on my motherboard barely allowing much transfer at all.

It progressively got worse over time, but apparently showed its ugly head "first" while playing Project Reality because it is much more hardware intensive than the other games that I was playing at the same time.

So yeah, there's your 3 year update. Still gaming on the same system, though.....I just use SATA ports 3 and 3 and disabled 1 and 2. Strange.

Was it a Asus motherboard?

Yes. An A8N 32 SLI Deluxe.

I still use it today, actually.

Last night I heard a bit of a fizzle and a burning smell, I'm thinking a capacitor may have vented. The system is still running, though. I am going to have a better look when I get home from work.

Well, I do not notice any bulging or burst capacitors on the board. Not sure what I heard yesterday.

It sounded like a piece of paper slid. But I assume that was a sizzle. I was looking for this piece of paper and then started smelling a burning sound coming from my tower. All in all, there was no piece of paper that slid anywhere behind my desk.

Strange thing though, everything is working.
