Upgrade old pc?
Hi
I have recently started playing PR again and I feel that my fps is a bit low. It's so bad it affects my gameplay, most of the time in the region 15-30 fps.
First of all, a list of my components/settings.
Amd 3500+2.2 Ghz, OC'ed to 2.4 (gave a slight increase in fps)
ecs nfrce-4 am2 MB
4 Gb Ocoz Reaper pc8500
Ati Hd4870 512mb
Samsung HD250HJ 250 Gb harddrive.
No stability or heat issues.
I run a 23" LG screen in 1920x1080 resolution.
If I run on low/medium graphics settings, I get 50+ fps on open field type maps. 15-25 ish in citymaps.
If I run on High settings, there's not really any difference.
Would a better cpu give me some extra fps/better stability?
As a comparison, I run CoD mw2 on highest settings without issue, 60+ fps most of the time.
Thx,
Lajning

Yes a better CPU RAM and Motherboard combo (unless you can upgrade the CPU and ram to current gen without changing the 'mobo') will increase your performance. I recently upgraded to an i7-2600k at 3.4ghz, and PR really does like the faster clock speeds.

Thx for your reply Pedz.
I was thinking of maybe buying the fastest Black Edition am2 cpu still available. Do you think it would be sufficient? I really don't need a better PC for anything else than PR at the moment.

Re: Upgrade old pc?
I'm not clued up on my AMD processors and neither old versions
, I don't know if you can wait out till the next patch for pr with supposed bug fixes and optimisation fixes and see if that improves it slightly? (Don't ask when its going to be released...
)
However I do not think you will get a huge bonus by upgrade, and is money better saved for a complete new PC in the future. Also try playing with low textures, I found it increased the FPS on my old system.
So its the waiting game as always
but the short fix is low textures which should help.
About the black edition though, if it can give 3ghz + then it may be worth while (dependant on cost, I'm thinking sub 50 GBP).

Re: Upgrade old pc?
Yet again, thank you for your reply.
I will look into the amd market, I believe there are a bunch of nice ol athlon x2's in the 2.6-3.0 Ghz range at sub 50.
I will also try and fiddle some more with in-game settings and such.
If I get a new cpu, I'll give a verdict in this thread.
a revoir

Re: Upgrade old pc?
Sorry for doubleposting, but what the heck.
I've decided to atleast start looking at a complete upgrade. The reason being my audiconnectors on my case is worn out (so is the ones on the Motherboard.)
So I need a new case, and while I'm at it, why not upgrade my Cpu,Mobo and Ram too.
I'm on a pretty tight budget, though. Right now, I feel like a Sandybridge i5 2500k is a good buy, but can I get sufficent performance in PR with a cheaper AMD cpu?
My budget is: ~$600, ~?400, ~450 euro.
Thank you,
Lajning

Re: Upgrade old pc?
Well, don't think about building PC only for PR.
If you want go for gaming you should look in Intel direction, if something else than gaming (something with multimedia work) than AMD is good for it.
I'm Intel consumer and I never had dealing with AMD so its hard to tell about it, but Intel - stable and reliable in gaming. About budget you don't have to buy i5-2500k but something else, but of course if you want doing overclocking than yeah, then it's the best option.

Re: Upgrade old pc?
You should easily be able to afford an i5 2500K with a solid mobo and 8 GB of ram along with a decent case for $600, even including shipping.
If you're looking for something cheaper, I bought an AMD Phenom X4 945 a year ago, its been 100% solid for me playing a wide range of games, including plenty of ArmA 2. The black editions are probably better choices if you end up going that direction.

Thanks lads, I'll check out some benchmarks and such and try to make up my mind about this. I'll let you know what I get and my thoughts on it.

AMD fanboy here to crash the party. Jk.
All these Intel fans with their ridiculously fast cpu's. As previously stated Intel Sandybridge will DEFINITELY increase performance in everything and that current proc is seriously slowing you down. However with intel comes price and it's not cheap. Your blowing at least almost 500 for CPU and mobo. I have an AMD Anthlon x64 6400+ Black Edition on my current rig. It's old yes but only recently bottlenecked. There are Plenty of Excellent AMD CPU's that can meet your needs if your on a strict budget.
Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor HDX945FBGIBOX

Just to get you started.

Re: Upgrade old pc?
Great info guys, thank you allot.
I have yet to buy my new parts, but I'm searching the intrawebz constantly to get the most bang for my buck. As it is, I might even be interested in a new GPU as well.
But, I will probably upgrade CPU,mobo and ram first + win7 64bit OS ofc. If that does the trick, I won't upgrade the gpu.

Re: Upgrade old pc?
Ok, I got the advice to wait for the amd bulldozer series. As they turned out to be quite a failure, I will get a phenom II after all.
My criteria has changed a bit since the last time i wrote.
I want a mAtx motherboard with the following:
* Latest hdmi (built in graphics)
* Passive cooling (no fans)
* Some overclocking ability. Multiple clock on a 965 BE phenom.
If possible, I would love to have 1 IDE port for my dvd combodrive. I don't see a need to upgrade that
Thx guys!
Edit.
Ordered some parts yesterday:
Phenom 955 BE
MSI 880GMA-E55
8Gb G-skill ripjas x performance (2x4096mb)
FSP FSP500-60APN 500W
Two 120mm case fans
Windows 7 64bit premium
