Heya Scot, i know your the go-to man on the forums when it comes to this kinda stuff so was wondering if you could help me out with my problem!
I have written a small vb program that changes the keyboard file in windows. It works fine, however I have to restart the machine to apply the changes.
I want the user to be able to apply the changes without restarting. If I can't do this through VB does any one know if I can add another keyboard layout to windows.??????

All my drivers are kept up to date with driver wizard, I have also restarted my machine, as you will notice by reading the first line of my message?
It alters the kbdus.kbd file in windows which maps the keyboard.
It's for a learning disabled child who needs certain keys changed on the keyboard.
Since windows picks the file up automatically at start up, in order for the changes to occur I must restart the computer.

I've just done exactly what you said, and unfortunately it is driver error. My drivers are up-to date and I do not get the same problem.
Also, have you turned the Anti Gigabyte-Adaware-Yottabye scan off? (Also known as the Anti G.A.Y scan). This could be stopping you if you have G.A.Y enabled.

If i post a dx diag dump with my drivers information could you take a look at that and help me find the root of the issue? Simply saying it's a drivers issue does not help me at all. Your insight will be much appreciated!

This is the grand daddy of keymapping software. and it's free. And it's aimed toward your needs.

Set another .bat to unmap the reigstry changes upon exit. Or write lots of " $^p:: " into your .bat files.
(REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE HAND)

Thanks for the response LITo. Unfortunatly, the IT department will only let me use the VB method. Don't ask why, but it's something I said I would do in my spare time to help them.
I work every thursday and tuesday at a special needs college, and one of the kids has a dangerous and severe learning disability called dyslexia, and he has never been able to use a computer properly because of it. Just trying to make this kids dream come true!

Well, you might do better porting one of the software suites like AutoHotkey to a USB thumbdrive and add it alongside a PortableApps Suite, Portable App Directory | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives then your charge could sit down at any windows PC and any keyboard and use his thumbdrive to remap the keys, and use OpenOffice etc as fits his needs. Buy a $10 thumbdrive, build a PortableApps suite for him, give it to the guy, he'll be grateful. And it'll save you hours and hours of frustration.
(FYI: If you add Firefox to the suite, you have to reconfigure the cache to store it on the thumbdrive..., otherwise the data is stored on the PC HDD which leaves it vulnerable)
At least then he could have a consistent user experience across PCs and maybe even buy his own laptop.
