Bring back the Classics..

Post by Reardon »

I dont know if its just me but i really miss 7 Gates, Sunset City, Road to Ki'ongan ne, Ejod Desert and im sure im missing some. im kinda getting sick of playing the same maps over and over. but back when they were in PR i always had fun on them. ( i know the spelling on the second last one is horrible :wink :)
Just thought i'd see what the rest of the PR community think.

The reasons they were removed is that they don't offer the same replayability and realistic experience that the other maps do. Ejod was a city which didn't make sense, where the team's assets were blatantly imbalanced and the same strat of the MEC armor flanking the west side of the map made for shitty gameplay. Sunset was my favorite map, but alas it had the same problems as the other ones in that it was just too small for a proper realistic experience. Most 1km's are getting the chop since they aren't substantial enough to simulate a war between two factions.

You can find various mappacks around which - to my knowledge - have all the old maps in them if you really want to play them.

by map audit he means use that to edit the old maps, I think they're in the co-op map-pack.
However i can agree to bring back 1 or 2 smaller maps for seeding servers etc. it's really hard to find a nice ,map to play on with 30-40 players on a server. EJOD and ghost train etc. were really good for getting a server started and really enjoyable and I think they would also work well with bots, howeve ri think that the co-op map pack has these maps in them.

Yeah mate, thanks for the explanation :P was a bit confused. :) anyway Ghost train oh my that was a brilliant map. But yeah as i said, i love these old maps. maybe a retro map pack for servers could be released (if it wouldn't be too hard) i think that it could be a cool little event for some servers to use them for mabye a night a month.

If a community member wanted to fix up all the old maps so that they at least work with teh latest build and then wanted to run them on a passworded server (since its modified content) then I'm sure alot of people would enjoy it.

(basically you have to change the init.cons and bring the gameplay objects up to what objects we use now)

However its not something that the team itself is going to do probably, we all have our own projects to tend to, and we certainly cannot include those maps as part of the main release installation as it would explode our installer size.

Rudd would it be possible to have the downloads seperate to the init.con file? for example you could download the maps and update them if needed with the init.con file that could be downloaded seperatly?

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end... "
