Marking Grenades

Post by Malik »

Just had a good idea... How about taking those magic grenades that appear when you mark an attack/move/defense etc and give them to troops? Give them to a couple of classes to help them mark certain positions. Of course they'll need to be adjusted so everyone can see them, not just the squad that's using them, and take out the automated grenades currently appearing with these commands. Yep, let people plant them automatically. So, what will they be used for?
  • Mines. Just stand over a mine and right click (by default, doing that to grenades drops them on the spot incase you didn't know :) ). Tanks can avoid these much easier and it'll make it easier for engineers to defuse them.
  • Distractions. Pop some of these near the enemies and they won't know what to expect, especially if it's a red one. Red's got to be bad!
  • Air strikes. If you want a bombing run done, just throw some of the nades in the position you want and call a nearby bomber. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to see you've so kindly given them something to do.
  • Marking movement. Of course they'll still be used for this, but you can't just make them appear any more. This is BF2 not Harry Potter. A squad leader will need to plant his nades carefully and he can even lay trails for other squads too and stuff. It really assists communication. Use your imagination!
Now you're probably confused. How the hell are we going to identify between 32 blue smoke grenades lying around? Firing modes! Yep, you switch your firing mode as you normally would only this time it'll change the colour of the nade you currently have. Hey, it's not unrealistic, you can just say it was that colour in the first place. ;) So you cycle through the firing modes, pick out a colour not many people are using and throw it down. You decide what the colour means.

I think it's a pretty cool idea, just make sure you turn up the smoke height a little and put a time limit on their use so they can't pump smoke out forever. What does everyone else think?

I think maybe it's time to throw out the whole
Smoke Grenade system on movement and actions.
However, I do think that using smoke grenades to call in
airstrikes is a pretty good idea. So, I propose a new system
for movements and actions.

1. Defend - A giant circle, radius 15 meters, with the
purple shield right there in the middle. Of course, this would
only be displayed on the minimap.

2. Move - First off, I think we should add a grid to all the
maps. Then, we'll do something similar to what OFP and
BF1942 did. When you spout off the move command, the
squad message sent is, "Move to (X, Y)".

The other things I would suggest don't have enough detail
in them to consider them plausible, so maybe some other
guy could add on to these.

I think it would be a good idea if used properly, but i think people would spam them.

I doubt most people would spam them, only the vanilla noobs.

Like the idea for calling in air strikes, and possibly signalling a pick-up is required, seems logical.
But I don't think smoke grenades ar every useful beyond that (bar cover of course).

As for the mines, how do they mark them in real life? IS it really with a flag? lol
