It's not that funny at all.
If you play public most of your team are far away from well trained and organized behavior on battlefield. Even in a clanmatch you have to work hard to not loose the overlook even WITH a minimap to help you.
If we want a less arcade like battlefield simulation with the "feeling" of a real firefight then taking out the minimap will be a disaster. Thats my prophesy.
90% of your mates (and for god sake this is a online shooter with thousands of greenhorns) will loose orientation and stray for the next best action they encounter. On the other hand, you can see this minimap as compensation for some disadvantages you encounter when playing a computergame (e.g. all-looking-same avatars, 3D-orientation, well known teammates with real combat experience, and so on).

Taking out the at a first look unrealistic minimap will be a step in the wrong direction. You will encounter LESS real looking firefights and LESS tactical behavior! Thats what I can say for sure.

Besides of all this, it is just way more fun to know where my mates and friends are on the map. It is way more stressless to look on minimap and know where my injured mate is or where I have to deliver my supply bag or where I have to position myself or my squad perfectly. A GAME should make fun!

just have the map and have it tell you nothing about where you are.

yes, something like it!

JohnDoeGamer wrote:Minimap = cybernetic implants. Might be good for Battlefield 2142 but not a reality mod in modern times. I like the idea someone suggested about the MAP key pulling up an image looking like a pocket map (with no real time icons on it). That gives reference of the area and thats it.
Hey, it is supposed to take place a few years into the future. In which it is possible that Land Warrior is made better, and maybe you have that eye piece covering the top right corner hehe. It's not very easy to simulate onto a screen that you have two eyes, that is to say two fields of vision that overlap in your mind.

Plus with that there's something called GPS. And whatever that thing is that makes it easier to designate friendlies from enemy(IFF?).

Plus I would like to know where my squadmates are, if they are even participating in squad action(so I can boot em!).

imo the minimap is good for simulating the peripheral awareness that a computer game cannot give.

in light of that it should only show friendlies in a pretty close radius to you. same for designated targets - only those in line of sight and quite close should show up on mini-map.

in light of the above the mini-map should be quite zoomed in and not able to zoom out.

i hate enemy tags and PRMM getting rid of them is briliance.

i'd like to see friendly tags dissear as well. the uniforms are different enough for unaided id.

the big map should only be a map. perhaps keep place names on it only. annd commander/squad leader orders (like you'd get in a tactical breifing). nothing else.

I seriously think PR would be just fine and more immersive without the minimap. People will still enjoy the game. Not being able to see dots showing realtime locations of friendlies is only going to add to the feeling of staying with a squad and not venturing out alone.
Realism and fun aren't mutually exclusive.

I think its fine as-is and is particularly useful in preventing fratricides at long range. The first thing I do when I see distant contacts is check my map for blues. Get rid of that and the accidental teamkilling could get pretty steep with our very similar coloration at long range.

This is a touchy subject... All I can really say is have a test, see what works, what doesnt, and hey, if it fails....it fails... Nothing can be more simple then a tried and true technique called guess and check. :)
