Re: Knives. Do we really need them?
I personally love it. I'd never get rid of it.
It all depends on what we could replace it with. I always use my knife as an officer. Run out of Pistol ammo in CQB, whip out my knife, and do work.

Re: Knives. Do we really need them?
No, don't remove it. I'm not a fan of being completely defenseless when out of ammo. People were fighting wars for centuries without bullets.
But I'm all for weakening it. Have it still one-hit when aimed at the head so you can do stealth stuff, but at the chest, especially against amored targets, it should take a few hits so that it's not used as serious alternative to a firearm in combat, unless, like I said, you have the element of surprise and can take that time to aim at the head (maybe have an animation when right-clicked that makes the knife/bayonet point directly to the center of the screen)
But entirely removing it, no. Even without ammo a soldier should be able to have some sort of ability to fight. Of course not nearly as effective.
I see your point with the slots though.

The most effective weapon on ghost train is the knife and bayonet. You just need the tactics and preferably a mumble server.

I'm a fan of the knife and I only use it for da stealth ninja kills, but I'd be willing to sacrifice it for something such as......fast ropez

The knife is very useful, I use it almost every time I play, just yesterday I was clearing a building on Karabla, i went onto the roof where I found 3 US healing each other so I got my bayonet ready and charged them I got all 3 of them stabbed before they knew what hit them.

So how will we knife rally's and firebases? Knives have multiple uses in PR just like IRL,

Knives at least need changing, they shouldn't be killing players with blows to the feet.

Re: Knives. Do we really need them?
The most important thing your forgetting is that the knife is also a 'metaphor' for any kind of physical combat i.e punching, rifle butting, tackling/taking down a cqb contact by any means necessary.....
with that in mind as well as the stealth aspect of the knife/satisfaction/and fb/cp aspects, the knife should remain as it is
besides, can you really think of anything useful to take up its slot

Yeah, leave it be until there is something really worth replacing it with.

Re: Knives. Do we really need them?
Knife being 1 shot kill certainly compensates for the absurd hit detection.
Unless it gets replaced with a backup pistol, rifle, AR, HAT... I say keep it.

I'd say remove all knifes and give everyone bayonets.

Re: Knives. Do we really need them?
Well only reason as I see it fit is because of the fact that we could say, 90% of Soldiers always have a knife with them at all times yeah? If I was a soldier, I'd always have a knife handy.
I know the use of R/L and PR are completely Different, but it could fit.

Re: Knives. Do we really need them?
As much as we all, myself included, LOVE KNIVES, it's really not a necessity.
Rallies would just require either killing the enemy enough times in the radius of the rally, or bringing two people in to overrun it.
FBs would require a change so that if the enemy has x number of people within a short distance, y, that it will automatically 'destruct'.
In all honesty, I would be very much towards removing knives, because it would mean that CQB weapons (ironsight rifles, pistols, carbines/smgs, etc) would have a distinct advantage. Of course, IRL, there would be the chance that a soldier would rush to gain a physical advantage over the enemy (ie grabbing and torquing the rifle away from himself, and fighting to pull it from his grip, etc), but it's not necessary to portray in PR, because just like IRL, it's not likely to happen very often at all anyway.
If it means that I can get an useful tool as a replacement, I would be fine with that, even though I may miss stalking people in the grasses of OGT with only a knife and a sprint bar at my disposal...
