'Unguided' Hellfire Missiles
In order to make firing on the move, as well as hitting stationary targets, more idiot-proof, I would suggest adding in a new hellfire mode.
You aim, fire, and then the missile will guide itself into the area that the crosshair was on when fired.
This will make firing while hovering less of a hassle, since the hellfire could be fired off and then the helicopter could immediately retreat. While moving, the hellfire could be fired when the target was under the crosshair, and the hellfire would launch and hit that target; any stationary target will be much easier to hit, even if the pilot is jerking around and/or the helicopter is moving at high speeds.
To balance the ease-of-use of these missiles, it could be made so that only one missile can be fired off at a time, making sure that 5 targets couldn't be destroyed in a short time due to the fact that the gunner can aim at a new target as soon as the first missile is fired.
Alternatively, some mechanic may be implemented to make the gunner stay looking at the target for long enough for the hellfire to guide into the target, making the need for the gunner still aim at the target during the missile's flight, but not needed to aim directly at the target, allowing a bit of forgiveness if the pilot jerks the craft or if the craft is in motion.

This is in the latest version of Combined Arms. You click once and the missile will land on the surface you clicked.

Well you can click again and it will update the target info.503 wrote:No wonder I kept missing moving targets.

That sounds like a good system.CAS_117 wrote:This is in the latest version of Combined Arms. You click once and the missile will land on the surface you clicked.

Sounds like TV guided missiles but without the TV attached to the missile like it was in vBF2

Sounds good, for me everything is fine what brings the choppers closer to RL. Right now they are a kind of joke.

I think we should move this discussion to the other topic at hand which is alot more "realistic"

I disagree as this is a valid suggestion and we'd bring the other thread off topic.I think we should move this discussion to the other topic at hand which is alot more "realistic"
I'm all for this idea, it's a pain in the *** at times being unable to fire and forget. And this would make firing on the move, much, much more effective.

Agreed. Would love to see this added to the current PR helicopter arsenal, or even replacing the current guided missile mode altogether.Spaz wrote:That sounds like a good system.
Man, you CA guys are one step ahead.
I disagree. That thread refers to having helicopters lock on to all vehicles, whereas I am simply suggesting a point-and-click firing mode.Sparatan117 wrote:I think we should move this discussion to the other topic at hand which is alot more "realistic"
And until laser-ing requires the laser-ee to stand and hold the button while aiming at the target to sustain the lase, I will have none of this 'more realistic' business!

Well the system is used for all armed aircraft really, not just attack heloes. LGBs, AGMs etc.

So does it function like that other guy said? Like vBF2 TV-guided missles but with the camera on the chopper not on the missile?

Heh, I guess that's one way of putting it; Our hydras are not linked to any fire control I'm afraid. I figured that would be a bit much for our first release...Sparatan117 wrote:lol so its like the "hydra" should be only with a little more punch

I experimented with putting the hydras on a rotational bundle and entering a mode where you can swivel launchers around and fire them. It makes flying a bit weird though.

you know that they only move up or down 15 degrees right?Solid Knight wrote:I experimented with putting the hydras on a rotational bundle and entering a mode where you can swivel launchers around and fire them. It makes flying a bit weird though.

That's a lot more than I thought. It's fifteen degrees in either direction or total? Currently I just set mine to three degrees of elevation and seven degrees of depression for a total of ten degrees. It made attacking ground targets a hell of a lot easier since you no longer had to dive so steeply to do it.Sparatan117 wrote:you know that they only move up or down 15 degrees right?

If I haven't gone completely batty, a "realistic" lasing system would mean that you don't lase manually, and instead the fire control system uses it to range to see if you are within parameters for launch, and the tracking business (the "lock") is accomplished by sensors that track it within the camera and whatnotCelestial1 wrote:Agreed. Launch guidance still uses a laser though, but it's automatic. Doing it manually risks burning out a laser, so letting the computers mess with the laser instead is a better idea.

This is basically what taking down tanks and APCs should look like.

Re: 'Unguided' Hellfire Missiles
From the Video, 2:12.
The Vikhr ATGM uses "a beam riding system, which is quite a bit different than a system like the Hellfire for the Apache, which homes in on a laser spot. Rather, the Vikhr kind of rides down the laser beam from the launch aircraft to the target..."
Not sure how the hellfire works, but apparently it's not like the Vikhr, so as far as I can tell your video is a moot point since it doesn't apply to any aircraft not using the Vikhr ATGM system, or any other similar system...
