Buryable IED's

Post by Sniperdog »

I would consider myself a technical guy so I'm basically just gonna say what the specs of this are, how it would work, and what it would mean.

Specs:

-Gives insuregents the option to "bury" their IED instead of just placing it on the ground
-Takes MUCH longer to do this then just throwing it on the ground and would be similar to the idea of placing a grenade trap instead of just throwing your grenade (probably on the order of 60 -120 seconds)
-IED is no longer visible
-Weaker than standard IED (because it is buried)

How it would work:

Essentially this would be the "grenade trap" of IED's. The weapon would be an additional weapon in the sapper set where the sapper holds his shovel in one hand and IED in the other. The weapon would be mag linked to the normal IED so you essentially at any one time you have one IED with the option to simply place it or bury it. Once the shovel and IED are handy holding fire for 5 seconds while prone (or maybe crouched if possible?) would initiate the animation. This animation should be fairly easy to make as compared to some of the reloading animations and would consist of this:

*** Signifies that it is already made and would only require very slight minimal modification so that it blends in well

-Puts IED at his side
-Puts that other hand on the shovel
***Current dig animation repeated an adequate number of times (lets just say 20 for now)
***Current puts Shovel Away animation
***Current takes out IED animation
***Current IED placing animation
***Current taking out shovel animation
***Current dig animation repeated an adequate number of times (20 again :P )

The weapon would fire an altered projectile where the damage has been lowered slightly and the geometry is removed so that it is no longer visible. Please note that the projectile is not "actually" buried but is just invisible giving the impression that it is buried.

Pros:
Gives sappers another option for their weapons
Adds another realistic aspect of modern warfare (where you literally have no idea something was coming and their really isn't anything you could do about it)

Cons:
Possibly exploitable?
Would be able to bury inside of buildings and underneath cement**
No way for BluFor to tell an IED is buried somewhere

** Please note that this could be considered one of those situations where you are adding in a feature as a placeholder of sufficient quality... no i cant bury an IED indoors but I could take the time to take apart a wall or something and hide it in there. No I cant bury an IED by digging through solid concrete but I could just as easily bury immediately next to the road with similar effect.

What would it mean?

Insurgents could now bury IED's provided they have enough time to go into the exposed area and bury it. BluFor would now have to worry about this threat that can't be detected when moving through area's that they haven't been able to monitor.

ps
The cake is a lie...

The artillery IED is buried.

You often need to be standing on it to see it .. by which time you've probably been spread across the map.

Maybe its just because I run on low graphics (dont fret new computer tommorow folks) but I can typically spot an IED in the road while rolling in a Humvee or APC; although I will admit that I have to be driving decently slowly and carefully. (Please bear in mind I was mostly referring to the older "artillery shell" IED's which were much more visible)

Interesting concept. It's true that I don't think that's necessary, but could be very interesting indeed.
Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

If its not as powerful I would just put my IED on phone poles/garbage.

no the insurgents already spam IED's and mines we don't need invisi ones it will the insurgents another advantage over BLUFOR which is not needed
anyway just put your IED's behind poles, bin's, in rocks, under dead bodies, in houses or under a red car that loks like a bomb car and then lol xD

The Artillery IED is already "half-buried". The model you hold in your hand is the entire device, but when you deploy it the model is different and essentially half a shell to look like it's buried.

I like the idea, it's just that IEDs are so small you'd have to be walking on foot just to see one. Even then, you'd be flying 50 feet in the air. And vehicles have a tendency to not see IEDs due to it being small and you are moving very fast.

You just have to be more careful in where you place it, as already said the arty ied is buried and near impossible to see for a driver, if you made every ied bury-able you would surely have to give tools for the other team to find them which would kind of kill the fun.

I think this would be possible, when you bury the IED it could be like deploying a FOB but it would be a small mound of dirt?

And spend 5 minutes trying to set one in a hillside?

so instead of people seeing the IED and driving around it, then see a small mound of dirt and drive around it?

Hey at least you wouldnt have to use the IED to blow something up you could just try and deploy it on the object!

Honestly i don't think it is needed even if it is possible, the IED is so small already and you can hide it behind/inside almost anything. Sometimes on roads there are small rocks/garbage that you can put your IED inside.

Don't need invisibility for something so small. If they can see it, you're doing it wrong.
