I just have one question: why so against swearing? Are we suppose to be afraid of our mouths being washed out with soap or something? I'm pretty sure that swearing in war is VERY commonplace, and I can't help but swear when I'm in a very very VERY bad situation. Such as-

You're stuck in the middle of Kashan desert with the rest of your squad, and its over 800m to the nearest bit of cover. A tank appears on the horizon and is rapidly approaching.

"Oh golly gee darn guys! Looks like the jig is up! This sure is a disappointment!"

I mean, seriously? You don't think people would swear when they're about to die a very bloody and messy death? I thought TG promoted realism above all things!

OMG people swear IRL... that means people must be able to swear in PR for teh realz.

This is a game, kids play games. Swearing is not for kids. I swear a lot but I still try to respect the rules when I'm on a server that doesn't want 'offensive' language.

lol, seriously?

I will admit that I've sworn in game without thinking on servers that don't technically allow it, it can happen. As long as you're not going out of your way to throw swear words at people offensively, it's not that much of a big deal.

If you are typing swear words you are wasting valuable time that could be used for something else.
IF you are swearing on VIOP/Mumble try to remember that some people have speakers and their family might be nearby and they might not appreciate a stream of curses.
Honestly, I don't think the rule is there to protect children, I knew 95% of the curse words I know today ( barring foreign languages) by the time I was 5 or 6.
I think the rule is there to protect the adults from having to hear children see how vulgar and gross they can be in public, which is what happens when there is no swearing rule.
If you give 'em an inch, they'll take a mile.

The most important part to remember about Tactical Gamer is that it is a community for mature gamers and swearing like a drunken sailor doesn't meet that requirement.

The only time I've sworn to insult is when I get unfairly kicked from the server :D

But other than that, its just sorta automatic when I get in tight spots, like I said. So cool your jets there, smeg. ;)

EDIT: And on the whole "children hearing foul language", I'm a bit more concerned that children are playing a game which is centered completely around murder, LOL. Dont you think an accidental F-word now and then is a bit better for a child's developing mind than a desensitization to maiming and killing? :p

That's a fairly weak argument you've got there.

The only way you're going to get warned for swearing by an admin is if you manually type out a swear word in in-game chat or are in the presence of an admin when you're swearing. If you're unable to restrain yourself from typing out swear words while in-game, whilst in danger or not, then I think there's something else that needs to be addressed.

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal nor is it hard to prevent.

There's an auto warning and ban system for chat, so if you get warned instantly it was automatic. It does a great job of keeping the racists and disruptive players down without even needing us. Bypassing it isn't mature either, but we have plenty of players that try that too.

The general language rule is based on maturity, not because children might be playing. Part of maturity is being able to control one's language in a game out of respect for others. I'm sure there are racial comments in real wars too, but we won't be allowing that either because it is a game first and played by people that want to have fun, not listen to players expose their racism or their inability to tell the difference between being on the Chappelle Show and communication with strangers who don't have any context for their actual views.

only problem with the chat filter is it carry over to Squad chat and its pretty bugged and only filters yankie swear words anyway so is useless at the job its there for in the first place and is just annoying tbh.I got auto kicked many times by it for one swear word in squad chat with guys with mics swearing alot  .

If there was a way for miner swear words not to be In this automated system it would be fine tho as some swear words just shouldnt be "shouted" in a "room" full of strangers or it to not filter Squad chat as thats pointless as you could verbaly abuse ppl in your squad on a mic anyways.

Had some good rounds on TG but After one to many auto kicks for swearing in SQ chat its to frustraiting for a guy with no mic to play there.Im only talking the odd shit here and there to no real swear words as thay take to long to type ;)

Yeah, I understand the need for the filter to block racial slurs, but all I say is the normal ol' F word and S word on occasion!

I really dont mind the chat filter too much, to tell the truth. What I mind most is admins who go absolutely nuts when they see you swearing. Swear in a TG server, and get insta-flamed by every admin and TG member on.

I definitely wouldn't mind if the badword-filter was loosed up.
Sure i see the cultural ambiguity tho i don't understand it, but the actual swear shouldn't be that important to anyone.
But also all those times i've been kicked for all the wrong reasons, like mistyping "flag" etc.
Atleast seeing more warns and less instakicks.

Then again, i miss the atmosphere of the iGi-server on good nights, where all they kept from the vBF2-filter was the word "donkeycum" :)

Most of the words in the bad word filter are words that are either racially-charged or can be used in reference to another person. As an example, the word "*******" will get you a warn or a kick because 99.99% of it's usage is directed toward another individual and it isn't meant as a compliment. The "F-bomb" gets a warning as well, as do plenty of others. I do believe the word "shit" goes by un-noticed by the filter, but I'd have to open up the list and verify that to make sure.

Basically it works like this: Most of the admins don't worry too much about language unless it is ridiculous. We let the auto-filter do it's thing and that is that. We will monitor mumble, teamspeak, and voip (if you are in one of our squads) and if things go too far we will ask you to stop. Every admin I know has dropped an F-bomb on VOIP, so none of us are choir boys. The simple fact is is that we just ask everyone for a little restraint, some common courtesy and maturity.

If a debate over our "swear filter" is the most controversial thing we've got going or the biggest complaint then I guess the important things on the server are going pretty well, wouldn't you agree? :)
