1. Go Phenom because I doubt a Intel Processor will like a AMD Socket (even if you try a hammer)
2. Because Athlon doesn't have L3 Cache
3. Because I said so.
Also. Any 9xx Series will preform about the same with a slight overclock to match the more expensive versions.

I concur with Fuzzysquirrel and Fighter. Phenom II x4 is the way to go.

The (quad) Q8300 (2.5Ghz baseline) LGA775 Intel is still a very good bang for the buck. Low energy use too.
