Random Crashes. HELP

Post by icywire »

Hey guys, I just returned from school a week ago, and ever since updating to .95, I have experienced a TON of issues :o ops:.
I run Vista(Bad, IK) professional 64 bit on this

Manufacturer:
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Processor:
AMD Phenom(tm) 9950 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~2.6GHz
Memory:
3326MB RAM
Hard Drive:
248 GB
Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
Monitor:
Dell 2005FPW (Analog)
Sound Card:
Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)

My problems come in two types; crashes/freezes and start up issues.

CTD-They occur when certain maps load, such as Iron Eagle or what ever its called( I stay away), when I try to delete profiles, and often in the middle of gameplay. I run it on custom settings with the display being on 1024X768@60Hz, geometry, terrain, effects, and texture all being on high.

Freezes-These occur when large amounts of gunfire/action occur in tight spaces. This usually results in the soundclip repeating and the computer needing to be restarted(oh boy, start up issues galore). This may be due to my graphic settings, but I feel as if my computer should be able to power the settings it runs.

Restarts-Occurs in the middle of games for no apparent reason. I cant really give more info than that because I havent noticed a pattern.

Start Up Issues(Less concerning right now)-When I power up the computer, only the fans run the majority of the time. I have to wait 10-15 minutes before turning it off and trying again. There are at least 4 fans that run, so I dont believe heating is the issue(what do I know). I was hoping someone would have some insight to these issues.

Thanks.

The main cause of crashing is too high settings, and as you have all on high, id suggest turning textures down to medium. PR is in the process of being optimised, and until that happens, you'll have to play on a bit of a lower setting.

If you want to check out your PC's temperatures you can download GPU-Z and there is a multitude of CPU temp readers.

Aside from what PEDZ said:

For CTD and freez driver updates might help.

Restarts: This can be cause by overheating as a safety measure to protect the hardware.
This can also be a bluescreen followed by an automatic restart: here is how to disable this auto restart: Vista Support: 38. Disable Automatic Restart to Read Blue Screen Messages

You should also check your "Event Viewer" logs and maybe analyze the DMP files.

As for start up issue: this might be either defective hardware or on rare occasion a bios failure fallback feature. This means that after a crash your bios possibly reverts to "fail-safe" settings. One of which might be to not use your GFX card as main display adapter. This would explain why the PC runs but does not show anything on the monitor. Plugging in your monitor on a different video port could show you if this is the case.

Thanks guys. I am having the guy who helped put my computer together check out the hardware issues. Its been really hot here recently so I was thinking maybe the random restarts were from overheating(does that make sense?).

Should my computer with those stats be able to run everything on high? Realistically that is

I have basically the same PC as him (see my profile), and I have NEVER crashed on high due to graphics. The only reason I used to get BSODs was due to the Realtek HD onboard audio. I now use a plug-and-play USB sound card which works perfectly.

I am also having this problem. Tested RAM with memtest for 9 hours and said no errors. Drivers all uptodate. Textures and filtering on medium. I just don't know how to fix this... :-(
