there is a minimum distance before the suppression effect happens

I once played around with trying to get the camera shake animation (from explosions) to replace the effect, but quite frankly if that was possible it needed someone smarter than me to try ;)

IRL bullets coming near you make you flinch, take cover, and feel fear; IRL two dudes don't generally stand there and duke it out until one of them dies.

Supressed? get down, move to a new firing location etc. Its a message from the game that SOMEONE IS TRYING TO KILL YOU! :D

If anything, the suppresion effect should be even stronger...

For anyone who has problem, COD has no suppresion effect, whilst BF3 has less than PR. Pick your game.

Btw, whats the range for the suppresion to kick in?

Agreed, make the suppression effect stronger...

I'm sick and tired of people ignoring the suppression effect and goes all in rambo style in most fire fights (does not apply to CQB, as there is no point). But suppression effect gives you not only the feeling of some reality but also to stand a chance against enemy troops, say if we're walking with a squad and suddenly under fire, first reaction is to get in cover, but most cases in pr experience and situational awareness tells us otherwise - So I might just stop, turn around and shoot back til I start suppressing them so I'll give a chance for my guys to get in cover because I know by situation I'm screwed anyway (for example I'm the only one who's too far away from any cover).

Or like in my clan, if we fired upon no matter the odds, we fire back - most cases, we scare the shit out of 'em :D

So for including me and others, make the suppression effect stronger ^^ - Because in fire fights, I lost the "reality" feeling after playing PR a long time now :D

As the answer to Arnoldio and epicelite - it's 15 - 25 m ingame, longer then 20 - 25 m the suppression kicks in. And to counter suppression is to react fast, act fast and flank or fall back ;)

Can it be other types of effects besides blurred?

Maybe black and white screen? Wasn't that in old versions or PR or am I thinking of another game?

Or make it impossible to use iron sights/scopes to discourage, but not make impossible, killing someone across the street from you?

Red Orchestra uses black and white and some blurr on the sides of the screen. It's efficient but totally not as much as the PR's one.

OP makes me rage a little bit. This "someone care to explain" and the behavior of 'what the fuck is this shit' makes me feel that he is just to lazy to read the manual: Page 12, first sentence explains it. Not your army, accept it or leave this game.

On the other hand RO2's suppression includes a "shakey" aim, which would enhance PR's gameplay greatly by actually making you unable to return fire while suppressed. Right now you can't see as much but shoot perfectly straight, hence the suppression doesn't always work as intended. Sadly that kind of feature is hardcoded and not doable with BF2.

Well I Never Play Online Due To Connection Problems, Even If I Take Cover, The Bots Are Just Trigger Happy, They Would Shoot The PLace I'm COvering, Causing The Blurr Effect To Continue Until Someone Attacks Behind Me And Stab Me To Death, I Play With 48 Bots In An INF Map,The Firefight Is Just Intense And EveryTime The Screen Gets Blurred, I Take Cover, When The Blur Is Gone, I'll Fire Again And Get That Blurred Effect Again, By The Time I Snap Out, The Firefight Is Over, I Really Have To Get Rid Of It, Or To Reduce It. :(

I believe RO2 has one of the best suppression features of a first person shooter ever.

When you're being shot at you really do get tunnel vision to an extent of the only thing you really care about is the fact that someone is shooting at you and you would really like it if they stopped. The effect of that being two fold, on one hand you are pumped full of adrenaline and pvt. joe for the most part is going to be shaking to much to remember all the fundamental principles of marksmanship in order to hit a guy, so that's why you have everyone shoot back and achieve results through volume of fire. And if you're not full of adrenaline you are scared shitless and then you just as useless when it comes to trying to actually hit your target.

We use the blurry screen to simulate to the best of our ability that mindset. If you have a better way to make that effect happen then we'd be happy to hear it. But we are limited within the BF2 engine and we do the best we can with what we got.

Also in RO2 the bullets are way more lethal and go through objects and surfaces, so you really have to hit the deck. You can't heal yourself later with a medic too (classic that is, the only good mode)

I also agree that the supression effect should become stronger.

I would say you divie the surpression into different stages:

1.: Blurry view
2.: High pulse sound, reduced accuracy
3.: Tunnel vision, either by really "beding" the "lens" to get that weird camera effect with tunnel vision, or by simply making the edges of the screen go black
4.: Unable to shoot, weapon is put down like while sprinting
5.: Character drops to the ground (= goes prone)

1) No use, you are already blind as your are, no need making the screen black
2) Not possible because hardcoded.
4) AFAIK hardcoded, not sure tho.
5) Pretty sure hardcoded as I've seen DEV answers regarding the change of stance not being changeable expect through the player itself.

1) I didn't write to make the screen black. Point 1 was actually just repeating the current surpression effects, for the sake of completeness.

Well, for the rest the main answer seems to be "hardcoded", which leaves only 2 options:

1.: Cursing about the limited engine
2.: Further increasing the optical and accustical penalties while being surpressed.

Thats the point, you don't have to blind people any further, hell I've shot people with my screen pitch black (enemy kit) simply because your aim doesn't move an inch, no matter if suppressed or not. If you manage to lay down sight on the enemy, he can throw all the lead he has at you and unless he kills you, you will land a direct hit.

In it's form, or better if I say within BF2, suppression does not achieve the wanted goal.

out of complete idealisms and this entire thread got me thinking about this.

Specifically Rudds post about mucking with the explosions.

Would it be possible to a high pitched whine in your ear when you are really close to an explosion? I.E link it to the suppression effect achieved with grenades? Or would that require two duplicate effects, one with the sound and one without it.

For reference sound I'm thinking about tinnitus :P
