[Map] Devil's Bathtub (2km) [WIP]

Post by tankninja1 »

Devil's Bathtub

Western New York concept map, based on Monroe County NY
2km map
Factions: BLUFOR vs. OPFOR (maybe US vs. China, Russia, or MEC)
Game play type: Infantry, with some APC/IFV scout chopper support I'm thinking
Image

So let me start by explaining that eyesore of a concept map, red areas are suburban areas, lime green represents tree lines, dark green is dense woods like if you mixed the kinds of woods you see on Militia maps and on Silent Eagle, blue is a creek with a waterfall in it, OD green is TBD but most likely lawns or the similar, the tan is fields, and the pink is potential flag area separation.

The inspiration for this map is where I live, since I started playing PR I've notice that the local area where I live might be a good place to create a map, so over the last year I learned how to create maps, even created my own CO-OP map.

The terrain I think will be somewhat unique to PR since there seem to be few maps there suburban, farmland, and woodland are mixed in such close proximity. Another unique feature that I like about the terrain is that the is a lot of natural areas ambushes or defenses could be set up. The terrain will be somewhat hilly consisting of hills as high as 50-100m, and oscillating between hilltops and bottoms regularly. As for the school, I was thinking of putting one in around there to add some suburban combat to a rural area.

Please comment if you have any suggestions or feedback on my concept.

References would come in handy, I really have a hard time imagining how this could be like.

And if this sketch is similar to the local where you live, then maybe it's best for you to actually take a satellite image of it. It'll far easy for you down the road with the editor and better for feedback right now.

Did you get your upper and lower falls ideas from Taughannock Falls? I used to live just a few miles away, and I always thought the huge gorge would be an excellent PR map.

I think that school? would be a great OPFOR or BLUFOR base if someone makes a nice custom school static :)

If someone makes a really cool custom static, it'd be a waste to use it as a main base. Having it as a flag would allow for it to be fought in and not just spawned in and ran out of.

I think this is a great concept, and I think with the help of some seriously awesome custom statics it could be pulled together.

I'll definitely be watching this thread.

I've based many of the ideas in the concept map on areas in Western New York and NW Pennsylvania, but most of them come from my home town.

As for the comments about the custom statics it would be great to have them, but I don't know any static builders. My plan was to use existing statics, some of the statics in Operation Harvest and Operation Road Rage were a close match to what I was looking for.

Over the last day too I thought up a few names tell me what you think of them,
1. Fididle- (Fid-id-le) a funny name for a game I learned when I was a kid, whenever you see a car with a broken headlight you punch the roof of your car and yell fididle
2. Operation New Horizons- inspiration from this name came from the GM research facility where they are developing a hydrogen powered car.
3. Allegheny Foothills- this region is at the very base of the Allegheny (Appalachian Mountains)

I've started some work on the map but for now its mostly gray and flat not much to see

In the future I might consider making a map of Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, or some smaller cities called Salamanca (auto correct spelling wants to call it Casablanca lol) or Bradford.

Could go historical reference for your names, and add a twist to make the name catchy

Totiakton
Seneca Trail
Zebulon's Grind
DenonVille
etc.

I was raised up in the NW corner of NJ, very similar terrain and when I had thought about making a PR map, I had similar thoughts of remaking the hill country battles and skirmish sites of the Revolutionary War in my hometown area. At the time there was not enough 'American suburbia' statics, but there are a few more now available and the guy making the Virginia\DC suburbs maps is doing a good job of creating a American suburbia map in the flat lowlands. If you press on with your mapping project, PR would have a matching pair of American maps, one flatter, and yours hillier, which would be a great addition to the PR universe imho.

Good luck with this.

Wait.. Syracuse?

Anyway,

If you use NY, use something around Rome, NY, where NEADS/NORAD used to have a base at (and might again in the future.)

But, ya know... :D My 2 cents only count sometimes..

Out of curiosity what would people think if I made it a winter map?

Winter maps take extra work, you should start a general thread or search for an old one that discusses the cons of doing a winter map.

In general, you have to retexture alot of assets and statics to be snow covered.

Of course very fitting idea for upstate, it's just quite a bit of extra work.

grab a freeware program that takes screenshots.

A cheap free one that works well, I use it regularly, is lightscreen.

Small image of a corner of the map, very early WIP, no real terrain features, at least not on this part of the map yet, hope you like it.

P.S. can moderators change the concept to WIP please.
