Willing to learn modelling...

Post by Daniel »

Which program(s) and knowledge do I need?

And what else is important to successfully start modelling for example the scope for the FN FAL ("FM FAL" is wrong I guess, as written in the Falklands-thread, Rhino... FM is radio xD xD ;) ) or for the M14

Cheers, Daniel

Sticky above: https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f388-p ... ssets.html
That contains some basic info.

Here's a thread with a number of tuts (some may be outdated though): https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f189-m ... s-max.html

FM FAL is an Argentinian made FAL btw.

Check out some of these videos.

- This guy has a series he's doing, intro to 3d modeling.
Introduction to 3d game art on Vimeo
There's a bunch, you can check out.

- A very well known guy Millenia who also helped out PR some, did a few videos worth checking out.
Millenia - YouTube

- Now if you're willing to spend some money on some other quality tutorials which have been helping me, checkout Digital-Tutors > Tutorials and Training for CG, 3D, Animation and VFX.

Programs, we tend to use 3ds Max 9 for BF2 export, import, etc. I guess if you're going to learn modeling any 3ds max version is fine. But for BF2 stuff Max 9.

First I would do a load of tuts before trying to model anything for the game.

As Adriaan said, the FM FAL is the Argentine made FN FAL since the Argentine FALs were produced by Fabricaciones Militares (FM).

Also wouldn't pick the FM FAL scope task (even assuming we have found out excatly what scope it is and gotten more refs, which so far we don't know) as your first one even after going over a bunch of tuts, although classed as an easy modelling task, and while it is in terms of size etc, you will have to work directly with another model and that complicates things which you don't want to be doing so early on. Something like the Bayonets would be a far better first task, once you've done a few tuts.

DL 3dsmax and start here 3ds Max Tutorials

its great for starting and giving you an overview of the entire program and learning the basics of pretty much everything, and they are really well made too, except for the skinning a character one, just skip it, and dont waste your time with that part

3ds Max Learning Channel - YouTube

3D Studio Max | Cgtuts+
this place has great free tutorials, and some not so great, im currently in the process of going through every single on of those, so if you need a study buddy or something PM me or add me on xfire

also if you download 3dsmax 2012 make sure to DL all the service packs cuz it has a bunch of glitches, also if your in uni you can probably download any autodesk software for free by using your uni email to make an account

and finally the most important part, make sure you have a ton of music cuz stuffs going to get real repetitive.

Btw you need 3ds Max 9 (not 2009) to be able to export into Bf2

You'll need to import your max 2012 files into max 9, by exporting it to a format like .obj, .3ds, etc. and check/fix errors (might take some experimenting to see which one works best, I'm not sure). Then use the BF2 tools from within max 9 as usual.

Ye, what Adriaan said but what he missed out is that soooo many errors are crated in the back porting process, that you will most likely find that the amount of fixing you need to do on the model is almost not worth doing (most people never do the fixing part) and many errors are missed, leading to many problems with the model ingame.

You are far, far, far better off working with Max9 from the start.

The amount of errors seems to vary case by case. I've had some imports that were easy fixing, but I have no idea what really factors in to it. :p

Still, for BF2
