Ok, i sounds like i was planning. Keeping all the turrets as their own models with own uv. Right?

But thats going to propably happen later, because I want to finish at least this vehicle before my deadline!

Not so much its own model, but its own UVs with its own material ID on those parts to keep them seprate, in much the same way I did the Zhi-9WA parts from the Zhi-9 sheet, since the Zhi-9WA used the bulk of its textures from the Zhi-9 (although I made the small mistake of UVing all the weapon types to the same sheet with the extra Zhi-9WA parts like the FLIR camera, so w/e weapon(s) where used on the map you would load textures for all the weapons which is what I want to avoid here).

All white bits are using the Zhi-9B textures/UVs:

And all Blue bits are using the Zhi-9WA textures/UVs, but like I said, mistake I made back then was to UV all the weapons to the shame sheet where they should all be on their own sheets.

Right, one question. Is this the right list to make?

3p Hull own uv sheet
3p cabin own uv sheet
3p weapon* own uv sheet

1pcabin Uses same as 3p but better
1passenger own uv sheet
1p weapon* Uses same as 3p but better

No what you should look for (in relation to this vehicle), for 100% optimization is:
  • 3p Hull and any visible interior (interior best to be baked down from 1p model/texture) - own uv sheet
  • 3p Turrets + any other parts related to different weapon setups that are not common among multiple versions and only too that weapon version - Own UV sheets, 1 sheet per weapon setup.
  • 1p Cabin - own unique sheet, nothing of it should be used on the passenger lod, or 3p lod, assuming the passengers can't see that area, if they can then need to talk about that.
  • 1p Passenger - own unique sheet, nothing of it should be used on cabin lod, unless the drivers can somehow see the passenger area, but they should be prevented from doing so unless critical for how the vehicle works/immersion...
You need to aim for using as few unique sheets as possible (each sheet counts for a new material, which in turn, counts for a new draw call) while also keeping it optimized with not loading textures that aren't being used (wasted texture space essentially if your loading textures for a turret which isn't being used on the map, or isn't visible to the player since the APC with that turret version is on the other side of the map). This is why its important not to have 3p interior textures on their own sheet, as this costs a needless draw call, when there is no reason for it either.

any visible exterior in the 1p views generally uses the 3p sheet, shouldn't be any need to have a "1p weapon texture", but that very much depends on how your going to view the weapon, but for all the tanks etc out there, the barrel/exterior is the same 3p texture on the 1p model, just the barrel is much more rounded (with more tris) etc in most cases.


As I'm sure I've already posted in this topic once before but I'll do so again, the 1p interior textures should be baked onto the 3p after they are textured, with their normal maps etc, so that you minimise the tri count and texture space, with also having no zfighting errors which from the outside, look pretty much the same especially from a distance, and you can see both the Z-9B and Z-9WA cockpit bakes on the 3p textures I posted above if you look closely, Z-9B's on the middle left of the first sheet, and Z-9WA's in pretty much the centre of the second sheet.

Although the Z-9 isn't a perfect example, it dose have many errors I wasn't able to correct before exporting it without major rework, it is for the most part on the ball.

Thank you a lot rhino and everybody else :)

I think I now know what to do with uv sheets now. Phew!

One more question though :D How do the windows work? Do I have to create edges where the window material should be? Currently 3p doesnt have any faces left for the side windows on the doors.

Its not a big issue to create them afterwards. Itll just take 3 min modeling and adds ~30tris

Any faces left? No idea what you mean by that....

Anyways windows should be modelled to main mesh, and welded up to the object, with them just having a different material assigned to them that makes the material transparent and the textures should ideally be on the main 3p UV sheet but can sometimes be on their own sheet, but wouldn't do that here.

Low poly is done. Final 3p tricount without turrets is now 10 519 and that includes the cabin!

As usual, thank you rhino and others. You make my life easier to make this model for bf2.

I finished the 1p cabin and made the 3p version. You can see now the 3p interior in the picture. i had to model the windows and adjust some vertices from 3p interior to fit the 3p hull. Because the tricount rose little bit, I had to again nerf some vertices from 3p hull. If everything went well, you propably wont see the difference.

Now Ill change to 3ds max 9 and start making the uv and smoothing groups. Then is baking which takes me to texturing.

And final part what is included to my thesis is lods and colds. And the time left to do this is 3 weeks...

Adriaan sadly couldnt open my file, though he still gave some advices. But for refrence, i really need pictures of the dashboard. I cant seem to find any :(

Thanks! Totally new pictures.

Btw, what about the tires? Are they in the same uv sheet as the rest of the 3p model?

yeah pack them to the 3p sheet, dont think it makes sense to use an extra sheet and you wont be able to see them on 1p

I made quick test! With the shittiest uv ever and shittiest baking ever :D

I was just so eager to see the next step on this. But heres a small sneak peak what the fnished model can look :D But hopefully zillion time better
