GAMING BUILD! HELP?!

Post by Nusrah »

Hey guys. I'm thinking about building a good gaming desktop!
That's fast on games like BF2 Pr, and simple games on steam.
But I need some small help.
Just wondering on whats your guys' opinions on and what Parts you recommend?
also which websites to buy parts from? Ive been on newegg.com its seems alright?
So I need your help on whats the good stuff to buy!
btw, my price range is about $1500-2000 !

Suggest away, folks. 2000 bucks should get you a top notch system.

Yeah, What type of setups you guys have?
I would want a computer past the maximum requirements to play BF2 PR!

This is mine and its awesome, imo:
I7 3770k
Asrock fatal1ty pro
Asus gtx 680 dc2t
128gb ocz ssd
1tb hdd seagate
Random dvd reading thingy
Evga power supply 650watts
Cm storm trooper case
H100i watercooler
8gb vengeance ram ddr3
This cost me more or less 1500$

You could possibly try to get a Haswell processor and an nividia geforce gtx 700 model.
Cant really make you a full setup, because my internet is really slow where im at atm.
But my pc is in your price range and probably a little bit under it. And im sure someone else will make you a full setup.

Do you do any video editing, photoshopping or is it simply gaming? :)

# CPU:

Get a Xeon E5 4650 (Sandy Bridge-EP, 8 cores, 16 threads, 2.7 GHz, freakin' 20 MB L3 cache), or older E5 2687W (same, but 3.1 GHz but freakin' 150 W lol) oh no, wait, those cost 2000 - 3500 bucks (EACH! ) already, so I recommend u to get the i7-3970X instead (6 core, @ 3.5 GHz, 15 MB L3 cache, though 150 W ) for about 1000 bucks "already"... Or if still too much, get at least a i7-3930K (same but 3.2 GHz & 3 MB less cache, meaning 12 MB, but therefore also 20 W less, so 130 W... and that for "just" ~ 500 bucks!!! Check review on bottom page of this link: Best High-End Gaming Processors: $200 And Up - Best Gaming CPUs For The Money: June 2013 ) :)

OR u wait for "Ivy Bridge" i7 Extreme 4960X @ 3.6 - 4.0 GHz this month or so (got 15 MB L3, 130 W TDP, socket LGA 2011 )

And cheapest solution is (though quad-core "only" then... ) the Haswell i7 4770K (3.5 - 3.9 GHz, "few" 8 MB L3 "only" and decent 84 W TDP... :) this though LGA 1150 socket... )

# RAM:

16 GB Kingston, G. Skill or Crucial RAM (running at least @ 1600 MHz)

# Graphics:

2x - 3x Gainward or EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 running in SLI, or 2x GTX 780 OR "simply" one GTX Titan or GTX 690... ;) 8)

Let others suggest the components as SSD and so on... ;)

Good luck!

Daniel he has $1500 - $2000 to spend, not $100.000! My suggestion, get a build that can go on a few more years and that you can improve without too many problems trough the years. And as always, keep the look simple but smart and by that I mean a box that ventilates well and stays cool.

Buy good coolers otherwise your money will burn away in front of your eyes.

AMD FX 8-Core Black Edition FX-8150. Why pay $300 - $350 for a quad core processor when you can get an 8-core 3.6 GHz one for $170? This'll have you sorted out in terms of CPUs for at least another two years. You can also overclock it to around 4.0 GHz.

Pronk, the i7 4770K costs a about 280 €, so about 300 $, which is a cookie for sb. who wants to have sth. decent and is ready/able to spend for up to 2000 $ on a nice new super gaming rig... (otherwise u could buy decent gaming notebook for 700 € too...) But if he wants to spend at least 1500 $ , he should go for at least the BEST Intel Quad-core or a decent 6 core. ;)

And from experience I know that even a 200 € "AMD FX 8350"- 8 Core can't compete with an i7 Intel quad-core...
A friend of me has such AMD 8-Core which already bottlenecks his EVGA GTX 670 FTW in Planetside 2 ("FTW" version has highest clock-speed) ... -.- says already everything about the quality/performance of each of AMD's every single unit of the total eight units in each 8-core-CPU. Just fyi...

There are several 8-core CPUs from AMD, one of them's 3.1 GHz, that's the one he might have as I've seen several threads about that one bottlenecking the 670 FTW. A CPU that can become over 1 GHz faster than that shouldn't bottleneck a 670.

1: Did he overclock his CPU?

2: As far as I know Planetside 2 is a bad example to use. A lot of people with all kinds of different rigs (great ones too) are having issues with that game.

You should browse the threads in this section about new PC builds.
There are setups listed and some discussion about hardware pros/cons...
Best line yet...

Just look for a case that you like. Then check if the ventilation is good. When you get a system for +/- 1700$ you should have a good amount o fresh air coming into your system.

Some suggestions:
Cosmos II ~300$
CM storm trooper ~ 130$
Corsair Obsidian 650d and other models

I'd definilitely go with a big tower.
Find a nice bigtower-> read some reviews and test-> buy it or dont

Dont really know the motherboards which support your cpu but i would go with asus, asrock or msi. Its all about reading reviews and then find out the features your mobo should have. Then buy one.
Be sure to get a good cooler though.

Hi Nusrah,
had fun playing with you in Beta,

Right now, this is the most interesting build out there:
PCgamingFTW's Completed Build - Intel Core i5-3570K, EVGA GeForce GTX 680, BitFenix Prodigy (White) - PCPartPicker

You might have to update some parts, ie i5-3570k to 4670k, samsung 830 to samsung 840Pro, Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe Mini ITX to Asus P8Z87-I Mini ITX, EVGA GeForce GTX 680 2GB to GTX 770.
  • Part ListComponent Selection Owner Rating Price Where
  • CPU Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core $219.98 Outlet PC
  • Motherboard Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe Mini ITX LGA1155 $163.98 SuperBiiz
  • Memory G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 $74.99 Newegg
  • Storage Samsung 830 Series 256GB 2.5" SSD $194.99 Newegg
  • Video Card EVGA GeForce GTX 680 2GB $418.27 Amazon
  • Case BitFenix Prodigy (White) Mini ITX Tower $59.99 Microcenter
  • Power Supply Corsair 650W ATX12V / EPS12V $94.99 Newegg
  • Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) $89.98 Outlet PC
  • Monitor Asus VS238H-P 23.0" $137.58 Newegg
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse

and that was based on this build:

Well, the i5-3570k in combination with the GTX 770 should rock completely, also 8 GB RAM should be fine (though for ArmA 3 you COULD go up to 16 GB, to be sure... maybe Litoralis knows ? )
And having a Samsung 840Pro running ArmA 3 & PR, you'll have 10 sec. loading times MAXIMUM (I BET), once your shaders are loaded 1st time loading... :D xD xD

Tbh. I BET you could run PR at least FIVE times at the same time (Don't do!!!), hardware (CPU + GFX card) wise... :p ;) 8)

And, ASUS motherboards are ftw... ;)

Saxoni, the combo of that CPU (runs very hot when OC'ed, possibly hottest mainstream CPU on market right now) and a subpar closed loop Corsair H55 watercooler is a bad combination.

Honestly Nusrah,
At this point, there are many ways to get what you're looking for, for ARMA3, a GTX 680 or GTX770 will be fine,

8GB of RAM is good enough, there is no benefit of 16GB for ARMA3, and a big benefit if you get to 32GB of RAM, where you can use a RamDisk to install ARMA3 onto the RAM. But 32GB of DDR3 RAM is exceedingly expensive right now.
It's also not necessary for smooth gameplay.

The cheaper solution is to put two good SSDs into RAID 0, and make that your ARMA2/3 drive. Again extra expense involved, and if ARMA3 mods are as big as ARMA2 mods, you'll need two very big SSDs.

I'd suggest heading to Armaholic forum and the computer building subforum. There are hundreds if not a thousand guys who are up to date on the optimal value/performance trade off when building a gaming PC rig for ARMA3.

Which cooler would you recommend? Does it run fine if you don't overclock it? Its stock speed is 4.0GHz after all.
