Yes, but remember that we're playing as grunts, not submariners.drs79 wrote:It is realistic, I say keep it. - Submariners use this day in and day out.
Is there a way to make the graphics show the soldiers climbing up the ladder and gripping the sides instead of the rungs?

Re: remove ladder sliding
Grunts also learn this although it is not advised and would be more difficult with full combat gear on, but if the alternative is to eat a bullet i bet a hard landing would be acceptable.
You wouldn't do it on a tall ladder though since your risking to pick up speed until you reach the ground. There is no way to code this though so being able to slide is better than not at all.

Re: remove ladder sliding
This might be reasonable for short ladders (for example on submarines) but from a crane in Burning sands or off the hotel of Muttrah....no.
In fact i still need to test this but im pretty sure a person jumping off the hotel in muttrah and some one sliding down the ladder will read the bottom at the same time.....The difference? one is on a magical ladder.
The velocity of the fall is way too fast, should be slower.
Firefighters do something similar to this, but the ladders are very slanted.

If you want more reasons as to why i think this should be removed/ really unrealistic read the rest of the thread.

Would like to see a source on this.Gracler wrote:Grunts also learn this

Re: remove ladder sliding
Here's something; Have players accelerate down ladders. If they start sliding from too high, they kill themselves, so short ladders are doable for the sake of close quarters fluidity, but for real high ones like on Hotels, they have to climb down normally for a bit. You'd be fucking mad to slide from that sort of height with a ballistic vest and tons of equipment on you, but I imagine on a short drop, you don't get fast enough to injure yourself. Resolves both the problems, the questions are; is it possible, and what height is fatal?

Re: remove ladder sliding
would this be an appropriate place to suggest the ladder on the hotel buildings be changed? i don't believe building code anywhere in the world allows ladders that long. i think it needs to be sectioned like the ladders onto the roof of some other buildings
Information in the hands of a critical thinker is invaluable, information alone is simply dangerous.

I always thought those ladders were put in the game to grant you the ability to access rooftops since most of the buildings are not enterable

Even then it still isnt realistic for someone to go from the roof of a 8 story building to the floor in 1 second.CroCop wrote:I always thought those ladders were put in the game to grant you the ability to access rooftops since most of the buildings are not enterable
I dont know why some people are so against removing something that helps people make the wrong tactical decision. You shouldnt be able to climb down a ladder while getting shot at, but this stupid Mario Bros. ladder sliding makes it possible. Thats what i think of every time I see someone do it. Mario Bros.
I suggest something be coded that works the opposite way of the parachute. As in, the longer you are on the ladder, the more damage you take. The Parachute in PR works like the longer you are on the chute, the less damage you take.
This can hopefully satisfy the arcade shooters and the realism side of PR.

:l its easier to jump off a roof than look for a ladder to climb down ... half the time you miss the ladder anyway and end up killing your self (splat on the street)

Re: remove ladder sliding
yeah but not sliding down the side of a 200ft hotel like batman or something. and even if you did, you speed up exponentially until you hit a speed where your fingers cant grip and touching the bars with your feet would make you bounce or hurt yourself. those submarine ladders arent more than 10 ft high i bet. think about it, at its maximum the ladder couldnt be more than just shy of the overall heigth of the sub and thats maybe two or three decks?drs79 wrote:It is realistic, I say keep it. - Submariners use this day in and day out.

i think just becuase you saw it on Hunt for red october doesnt mean they do that in real life, the likelyhood is that on subs they would have phased that action out becuase if more than two people were on the ladder at a given time they could injure their goballnads.

With the MP's we were actually told to slide down small ladders. I dont know what all the fuss is about.

Really? They told you to use equipment the way it wasnt supposed to be used? Interesting.rampo wrote:With the MP's we were actually told to slide down small ladders. I dont know what all the fuss is about.
As i have mentioned earlier in this thread. I was a house painter and have been up and down many different ladders carrying buckets of paint and such. NOT ONCE have I ever considered sliding down a vertical ladder to be a smart choice, or even possible with the light loads i was carrying.
Also for you to be able to slide properly down the ladder you would need your hand to be fully gripping the ladder, which on a vertical ladder with multiple supports, is impossible to do all the way down to the bottom.
Reference this pic.

You would have those wall supports about every 5-10 steps down the ladder, making it impossible to slide down while gripping the ladder. You would need to loosen your grip while sliding down and just be holding on with your palms....impossible.

Be nice if it could be deactivated for certain heavier kits.
Leaves lighter kits:
- Officer, Spotter (Radios?)
- Sniper (except no.4)
- Anti-Aircraft
- Heavy Anti-Tank
- Light Anti-Tank (except at4)
- Machine Gunner
- Automatic Rifleman (except rpk)
- Combat Engineer
Leaves lighter kits:
- Medics
- Grenadier
- Specialist
- Rifleman
- Rifleman Anti-Personel
- Marksman
- Crewman
- Pilots
- Sappers
- Civilians

Re: remove ladder sliding
Great idea, I think it's been suggested before. Howerver, just like the weight-influenced movement system idea, it's not possible in the Refractor 2 engine of BF2, unless you modify the engine itself.Vicious302 wrote:Be nice if it could be deactivated for certain heavier kits.
Gives people something to think about when there choosing kits and arranging squads and if possible certain kits and exceptions regardless of class.
