Would like to apply for Offline/Private LAN server license but form does not allow

Post by Michael Z Freeman »

Hi, how do I apply for an offline/private LAN server license ? The server application form does not allow for this. I do not have an IP and I've also had trouble retrieving my PID because the stats site is no longer in service.

Playing PR offline with bots just dings by dong for many reasons. But I need to run this kind of game using a dedicated server on my Linux machine over my private LAN. PR in it's current form just does not allow running a game with a decent number of bots (>= 49) in a coop game started from the in game (client) menu. On my medium spec 3ghz quad core I get frame rates constantly dipping below 20fps. Not good for BF2. Of course a SP/Coop game started in the client is trying to run everything on a single CPU core. Running a dedi server at least off loads the AI onto another machine. I just tested this with Forgotten Hope on my low spec 2ghz CPU machine and got much improved performance. It should be better with PR as well, otherwise I'll update its CPU.

BTW I've already tried simply copying the client files to the server and could not get that to work.

So can PR support a bot fanatic with an offline license ?

You do not need to apply for a LAN server license, if you simply have PR:BF2 on another computer all you have to do is "Create Local" as the local server infrastructure is built into your game. According to the license, it is prohibited to use local/home servers in the license agreement, therefore you must have your server hosted in an official datacenter. Regarding the PID, I'd wait for the DEVs to reply because I was able to get a PID a couple months ago but I forgot and the PID-fetching system is very old.

That is a mighty request, they are pretty clear with who and who doesn't get the server license and how within the agreement.

Hope my post helps.

Try "sv.internet 0" in your lan config, afaik then PR is not checking license.

This for a Linux server on a Linux machine.

I see, thanks. If the server license does not apply in this case then I'll take this to the PR:BF2 Suggestions forum. I'll ask the PR SP/Coop if they would consider releasing a server download especially for LAN SP/Coop that can't be used online (online internet features removed).

You assume I already have the server license files ? Or is there a way of doing this from files already provided in PR 1.1 that I can copy to a Linux server ?

1. Get vbf2 linux server files here. Ofc it will miss some cool features like 100p, maybe something else.
2. Copy mods/pr folder from your client to your server. It's containing all the clients files through, so if disk space matter for you - delete all _client.zip archives in subfolders.
3. "sv.internet 0" and dont forget modPath.

Should be profit, correct me if i'm wrong.

OK, I tried your suggestion. As I thought there is a problem with the number of bots.

The serversettings.con provided by the PR team only loads 16 bots per side, but at least it loads. Looking at it, it should load the full 64 bots but doesn't ...

EDIT: (this got left out) The con file above creates a game with 48 bots on one side and 1 on the other. In other mods a 48/48 game is created.

So this goes back to my request. As I suspect the PR python files (server says "PR AI Loading" in the server messages in the console) are doing things that other mods don't, hence the necessity of having the official server files. I doubt PR is limited to 16 bots per side for SP and Coop. I also doubt that this is a bug, and suspect it all works with the official server files.

So PR team, I'd love to play with 64 bots with a high framerate ! Starting this kind of game from within the in game menu just makes a =>20fps game on my machine, but with a server it should go up to an average of 50 to 75 fps as it does with other mods.
