I think you are talking about these videos, the guy is/was PR dev.

With the ability to import via Blender would that not, by extension, mean that PR modelers no longer have to stick with 3ds 2009 (or w.e version you're bound to)? As far as I know both Blender and 3DS export the same type of file (fbx for example). Is it that artists can now import models done in current gen 3d modeling programs, or is it a specific plugin for Blender?

If it is just an extension for Blender (which is FREE btw) would a potential contributor be able to import completed 3DS models into Blender and then export them into the correct format?

Atm export export scripts parsing scene directly rather than files and that's being major issue preventing their port to other max versions or other modelling programs. Ideally those scripts were written so they would export stuff from open formats like .obj but rewriting everything from scratch kinda too much of effort as export from max17 nor blender to max9 working just fine after mastering it.
