ounds are fed into the chamber and the explosive is detonated by an electric shock
no - the ammo is ignited by a firing pin - like in every other rifle
The advantages are that there are less moving parts, lighter weight, smaller size, and higher rates of fire (because you can send of an electric shock much quicker than you can eject a case from a chamber and **** the hammer again).
infact, the mechanics of a g11 are much more complicated than those of ordinary rifles - though the system is extremly complex, the rifle is still very reliable.
also, unlike you´ve stated, the rifle is rather large and bulky - the speed advantage comes from the fact, that you dont need any time for the case of the bullet to leave the gun, in order to make "room" for the next bullet

edit: what you are refering to is afaik the metal storm system, which uses also no shells - but works a bit different

Aha, my bad. But what I meant by smaller size, was the size of the rounds. Obviously, the rifle's kinda bulky.

And I think I did mention the fact that the moving parts don't work as in a regular rifle, thus upping ROF...

More guns and bullets make bad guys go away faster,
which in turn makes everyone in the area safer.

When i was talking about a bb gun I meant the way that the BB is fed into the chamber, not its firing mechanism

Nah, they stack up like a normal magazine.

The reason the G11 was so complex is because of mounting the magazine on top and having the 2000 RPM "salvo" of 3 rounds, while normal full auto fires at around 400 RPM. If they had a more conventionally installed magazine and didnt mess around with burst fire and vairable rates of fire the operation could be considerubly simpler, leading to the advantages KP described. Because as much as I love German weapons, they do tend to over engineer things.

Metal Storm is interesting, but works in a different way (barrels are also magazines, electric firing mechanism, etc)
The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

Does the G11 have anything to do with the G36 ?

If no then this thread has gone REALLY off topic...

Well they both start with the letter "G"?
Thanks for making things a little clearer for me.

The G36 replaced the G11 as the next generation German assault rifle. If the G11 project hadnt of failed the G36 would never have come into being.
