[?] Skinning tutorial?

Post by sekiryu »

Well, I want to skin, but I'm having some difficulty figuring it out. My two main questions are:

A. Where's the helmet/hat on the file?
B. How do I add the color, but retain the texture and lines on the objects like the vest, etc.?

There's a tut i wrote up, using the US light soldier as an example (Second quote), you might be able to find a better one.

The helmets and pouches are in:
Objects_client >> Soldiers >> [TEAM NAME] >> Textures >> [TEAMNAME]_kits.dds

Ok, so you have to hand-paint the details.

I'm not sure how other people do it, but i've found that most effective.

I can't draw a straight line on the computer even with a tablet. I figured that it would be easier just to use the polygonal lasso tool, put an outer stroke, then Gaussian blur it to the desired effect. This is what I have so far:

I'm confused about the pattern though. How do those obvious semetrical patterns not show up when rendered in-game?

How do I save the .dds file? I remember there are alot of options like DXT1 1-bit alpha and all this confusing ****.

You kind of have to play with the patterns, but it wraps around the model, so sometimes you can't tell.

and you can always cut out certain parts of a camo and overlay that part.

there's two shots from a flecktarn thing i'm doing, it looked horrible in the DDS file, but in game it's not too obvious.

As for saving, there should be a
DXT5 ARGB (Interpolated Alpha)

That's the JSDF camo, right? I've been looking for some real ones for a long time... my favorite camo :P

Real ones are hard to get because of JSDF PX laws. Replicas are pretty abundant in Japan. I got lucky and found a set on Ebay. But, I managed to coerce a Japanese retailer to sell overseas, and he has some:

Bloody expensive though. Sizing might be an issue for some people to.

I've played airsoft in it, had my picture taken while I was infront of a bush, and all you saw was a floating black balaclava and a floating black rifle, lol.

Man--if I knew how to do some BF2 modelling I'd make a whole JGSDF mod. There is the Japanese CQB mod, but it's not as detailed and extensive as I'd like. Plus I'd like some more Japanese vehicles.

$123 at the current exchange rate, actually.

Bah, now I gotta figure out which side of the helmet/hat is the front so I can add a flag patch.

Still too expensive :(

just put a big 1 and 2 on each side, put it ingame and find an idle player, that's how i found out.

Well, so far so good. Brightness needs to be toned down, but I still have this problem:

There's no texture. It looks like I'm wearing a rubber suit.

Ummm, try apply the filter
filter >> texture >> textureizer
and then change those settings
