well I don't know if game engines are that expensive.
Something around $400,000 would be my guess for unreal engine 3.

And now if they get that $3k then eggman can sponsor the rest since we all know that he has way too much money.

I assume that game engines are very hard to make? :|

Got my vote.
$3000 will cover about a year and a half of our server bills. It ain't cheap running all the different sites we've got going.

Quote from ArmA forums says it all.
"Arma 2 has a very lucky dev team, who have a very patient community, who will always stay loyal in the faith that one day arma 2 will be complete.
Flashpoint has a weeks worth of out the box gameplay, after that it's boring. "

What I wasn´t sure about is whether they were extemely difficult to make, or if it had more to do with time. I don´t know anything about making a game engine, is it alot of coding etc...?

To make a modern game engine it takes a team of 20-30 well educated and specialized programmers several years.

So, er, ya, quite a bit of time. ;)

I have said this before: Setup a Paypal option and I and many others shall gladly support PR.
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. ~Voltaire

If you are a serious PR gamer do not put up with the chaotic public server gameplay! There are much betteroptionsavailable. Also, be sure to avoid making these common basic mistakes.

And the team continues to have ethical dilemas over the whole thing. ;)

Contributing money to the mod could create several problems, such as some members thinking they are entitled to something because they donated, what to do with extra money, whos to be in charge of the money, etc. Its something we'd rather avoid if possible and instead work off of the cleaner contests. :)

Heh, I do not feel it is problematic. You just need to make it very clear that it is a donation and not a purchase that entitles you to special treatment (unless you opt for that which I would find perfectly ethical). Also, you do not have to put a huge, imposing Paypal on the front page - just put it somewhere discreet.

Anyway, I will continue to show my gratitude by voting for PR whenever requested. That kinds of begs the question, though: What will you do with such a considerable prize sum if (when!) you win if you do not know how to share donation pebbles? :p

mmmm.. beer.... ymmm

no but seriously, I doubt there would be too much money left over after using the donations to pay for your game servers and websites. And if there is, then you can just close donations after a while and say that you do have enough money to pay for the servers & website, or even just split the money between the dev team. I know you probably don't think that is the right thing but I'm sure most of the players wouldn't mind if you got some money for making such a great mod. We all know how much time and patience it takes to create a great mod like this one.

I can see what they are getting at. They are all volunteers and giving them money would give them problems. People could argue they purchased the game and claim they have been ripped off for one reason or another.

Remember the catch all phrase "its a free mod if you don't like it don't download it" would, at least philosophically, not ring true.

EDIT one more vote from me. great work guys. The Australian crew are getting right behind this one for you..

well yeah, but they can always put some text next to the donate link telling that it's a DONATION. And that people aren't buying any priviledges etc.
But yeah, it could be a problem but I doubt they even want our money.
And like I said, I bet they could waste all of the donations by paying the server & website hosting.

Whilst the Gameflood page suggests it's a USD25,000 grand prize, it's actually 25k in TOTAL prize money. The actual winnings for the team, if they go on to win, are $3,000. Second place is $1k, third is $500. Which is still a considerable sum of money but nothing like the massive surplus that'd be available were the team to win 25 grand lol.

With server costs of around $150 per month, the prize would be swallowed up in well under two years.
