Sniper rifles too loud?

Post by Wolfe »

(always a bit nervous starting a thread in this section... couldn't find anything in the search and the already suggested suggestions only talked about tripids and cover, but not rifle sounds)

Anyway, on nearly every map someone grabs the sniper rifle then runs off into the woods or atop a building. It doesn't take long before you hear the loud and trademark "crack" of the sniper rifle being fired far away. Now, I never play a sniper but when I hear them, it's easy as pie to locate and kill them which got me thinking...

Isn't the whole point of a sniper to not be heard when taking a shot? To say "****! where did that come from!". Don't modern snipers have high-tech silencers on their weapon?

Let me do a little of Bob's light work.
It's a supressor not a silencer.
Even firing regualr supersonic rounds a suppressor reduces range and accuracy.
If you are playing as a sniper, not DM, you should be very far away so that sneaking up on you is not easy if even possible.
And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.

So you're suggesting a "supressor" just because you're found easily?

That's correct and it would be bloody hard to hear them if they weren't used like they are now. If you want to increase your engagement range capabilities chose optics (rifleman) or DM if you want to go further (DMRs are zeroed to 600m)

Never seen a suppressor on any OVERT military weapon before. Not that I've seen all military weapons, mind you.

What ever happened to that Mk12 anyways? I remember seeing that back in .302 when I first played (didn't stay around very long)

QQ More, noob!!!!

ok, now that I got that out of my system... In all seriousness, the system doesn't need a fix, the players do. Snipers fire a maximum of what? 5 shots before they should reposition, IIRC. The problem with the sniper in game isn't the sound of the rifle, the ease of finding him... but the fact that snipers in-game rarely move after firing. When I play, after I take a shot... hit or miss, unless I have a spotter with an automatic rifle nearby, I reposition myself, often to a completely different angle. This also rings in the benefits that whoever you shot at, if it's a miss, has figured out your old position, and will be looking (and sometimes firing) at it. Too distracted with killing the mystery bush, you have the time to line up a second shot from the grassy knoll.

Accuracy should be the same, as long as the bullet doesn't actualy hit the can.

I read that alot of US military M4s were fitted with suppressors on duty in Iraq, since it made it harder for insurgents to locate the direction of fire, and resulted in less US casualties.

Why does subsonic ammo need to be cocked? (Shape of the bullet needs help to pass from magazine to chamber?)

Like it isnt bloody annoying enough, that they just run off to a hill and shoot, untill they run out of ammo, now the sniper fire should be silenced?
At least I can tell, what killed me, when I hear 12 big booms, before the lausy sniper finally gets me...and everyone finds out, where he is :p

But say for instance on EJOD, if I set up on a building and start shooting people right at the line of fog (where they are like half visible) they will still be able to hear me. So the very far away doesn't work :P

Not enough force from the round to cycle the bolt -- less explosive power I'd think

That's not the point, the point is that when they hear you, they'll have to walk a long way to get you, giving you time to GTFO of your hiding position!

If there is a large open space between you (e.g Ejod gas station) you can atleast take a few out, if not all of them.

well they have less powder. if the powder was less explosive the round wouldnt fire appropriately. the powder has to burn instantaniously so less explosive wouldnt work well.
