CTD w/out Message Upon End of Map Load

Post by FieroGT42 »

First, please excuse me saying that I'm positive about this or that, but I'm a career IT Systems Analyst, IT Technician, etc. with plenty of experience under my belt so just trust me on that. Thanks :)

Anyway.... I've never had problems with PR before, even when everyone else was having stuttering on Al Basrah, I was running pretty smoothly with inferior hardware.

Now I'm having an immediate crash to desktop, with no error messages or system events, as soon as any map finishes loading and the "Join" button appears.... yet BF2 vanilla runs like butter with up to 32x AF, 16x AA, trilinear mipmaps, and all the other goodies. (BTW, everything is @ 1024x768x32 @ 76Hz)

This is on a 100% brand new system, just built, burnt-in, and thoroughly tested this week. Specs are:

Foxconn C51XEM2AA-8EKRS2H MoBo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ @ 2.6GHz per core / 1GHz FSB
2GB OCZ Platinum rev. 2 @ 800MHz dual channel
BFG GeForce 8600 GT 256MB, PCI-E x16 via NForce 590
600 watt PSU, SLI spec, dual +12v

Every benchmark is 110% rock solid, temps are great, all memory checks 100% good with Memtest86+ via Knoppix boot CD. There are zero hardware issues. Trust me ;)

As for software and drivers, this is a fresh install of Windows XP Pro (32-bit), followed by the latest stable versions of all drivers, and finally BF2 + patch + PR. There is no antivirus, firewall or other interference; and I've already tried cleaning and reinstalling all drivers and BF2/PR. Also, I've had no issues with any other software or drivers, just PR.

I've tried using the pre-built NVidia profile for BF2, using no profile, using all settings at "Application controlled" as well as forcing all to minimum, forcing all to max, and everything in between. Also tried all known BF2 command line switches and the XP "heapsize" argument, both min and max. I don't see how it's the settings.

A LOT of other people seem to have this end-of-loading CTD. What's the cause, and what can be done about it? Thanks!

- Jason

Edit: Also getting a system error "ding" even if I close the program normally. Is that "normal" with the new version of PR?

Run in windowed mode. That should give you an error message

Edit: Also, state version of BF2 and if you have any older versions of PR installed... Unlikely to the point of being impossible I'd say with a system as new as that.

What was the name of the PR client you downloaded?

My first guess is you simply forgot to patch BF2 to 1.41.

Edit 2: Oh, and check for latest drivers! Image

if you run in windowed mode and get the net value equals zero error or something along those lines it usually mean a version mismatch

The name of the PR client I downloaded? I don' t know, but I know it was v0.6 client (not server) directly from the main page. Yes, I have the right version of everything, yes I patched correctly. I've tried it 3 times now from scratch, and I still have the same problem. Thanks for the suggestions, but like I said, I'm an IT guy by profession so I'm not making simple common mistakes here...

Running in windowed mode didn't crash, although it gave terrible graphics corruption where the groundn was bright and "smeared" for lack of a better term. The user interface hotspots were also misaligned with the display & cursor. I'm sure that all has to do with windowed mode, not the crashing.

well, if it runs in windowed mode (with glitches) than its most defenetly an DX or VGA driver issue when full screen overtakes...
...or some really viers VGA chip corruption... like just one or few shader pipes are corrupted... note, this is verry, verry rare thing to happen...
Who want to get things done will find a way and who dosen't will find an excuse.
