the echo isnt the problem.
i like the outdoor echos in the first version very much!

at this short distance the walls are, you will have the effect i told above very very early.
let us suppose the walls are 3m to left and 3 to right from the listener.
the speed of sound is at around 343m/s.
so, the first early reflection will hit the listener after around 0.0175s.
that means that after these 0.0175 seconds every sound is full of reverb reflections.
if the listener is where the sound source is.
your mic was at around 15 m away. depending where it was and how the surrounding looks like, it is possible that some early reflections hit your mic before the actual sound does. depending on your mic it is also possible that these early reflections wasnt recorded after all, but what i try to tell, the sound will be an other, if you can record it without these walls.

if you have a chance to do so, try to come as near as possible to the shooters position while recording for the most accurate sound like the shooter will hear.
you will need a mic with a real high SPL (sound pressure level), or your mic will oversteer and generate some distortion. maybe a good dynamic one, you would use to capture a snare of a drumset, would do the job. to have a limiter is also not that bad idea.. ;)

It would be nice if you could place the mic right where the shooter's cheek would be. Apparently, the M4 and M16 weapons are supposed to have a "sproing" noise, from the buffer spring in the stock.

Well the thing is, the walls does not surround the shooter, they were actually 10 or more meters ahead of the shooter, so I think the only sound significantly affected by the walls were the echos. Personally I thought the sound was very accurate and the reverberation did not distort the intial gunshot. I say this because I was there when the gun was fired and this isn't the first time I've heard the QBZ95 fired IRL (My friends and I go shooting every month).

Anyways, is the second version a little better than the first? I'll try and clean up the initial gunshot sound and put back a cleaner version of the first echo.

Dammit I want a QBZ95A. Damn America's importation laws!

All this "American made am bestest" is making me insane.

If I had a good recorder, I might be able to record the M16, but I don't think I would be able to get right up to it.

Like Sofad said, that partcular sound won't be useable. However, I am curious as to who recorded it. If it was the OP when please PM me and I'll walk you through how I'll be recording some rifles in the near future (fingers crossed for 0.7). For people interested I'll be taking my video camera with me and I'll post up the video for all to see :) ....and so sofad can yell at me for the sevral things I'm sure I'll do wrong

1. Record the 1p sound from up close where the shooter is. I'll be usng a Shure SM57* for this.

2. Record the 3p sound from about 10-15m away. For this I'll be using a combination of the SM57 and my mates AKG condenser mic**. The idea is that the SM57 captures the beef of the 3p sound while the AKG captures the reverb tail.

* A microphone typically used on snare drums (thanks for the segue sofad :15_cheers )

** A very sensetive microphone not really intended for what I'll be using it for at all so I'll have to make sure it is nowhere near the rifle/gun because the High SPL could be harmful to its diaphram.

uh oh, firedril in college....gtg...
