Explosions and dust

Post by Mora »

i find a video of the forgotten hope 2 beta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlSNlaMLU1U) and i see that there is a lot of dust when the artillery fire's on sand so i think that the explosion of a tank shell or a missile should get a more sand in the air if its a map like kashan.. what do you guys think of this

Seems to be a good idea, as always I'm not too sure the BF2 engine can handle it.

the argument on this is that it causes lag.

to date, I have seen no testing on this, nor have I heard of any.

why not?

Those are some really nice explosion effects :)

Ya particle effects are a bit tricky. I did some tests long time ago.
Basically BF2 can handle surprisingly high particle counts as long as they don't cover your whole screen. If your screen gets covered you start to lag (atleast my 7600gt did).
I made a test where I had half of the map covered with thick black smoke (loads of particles). It didn't lag at all if you watched it a bit further away. Moving closer made my fps go down to 1-2 or so.

Heh ya we need some new expolosion effects. Good thing with explosions is that you're not going to watch them closeby...you're dead if you do :p
It would be nice to have a dev or con dedicated to particle effects (*hint hint* ;) ).

well if when someone dies there screen goes black then you would not have to worry about lag for the people near the dust cus they would not see anything.

Imho, all the explosion gfx and sfx are weak in vBF2 and its mods. FH2 seems to be the only mod with some good ones.

Amerias Army has some mean *** grenade explosion sounds, none of that hollywood bs. Same goes with BiA and ArmA mods.
