I totally agree. Gaming companies are putting out games that will last tops 2 years. They want people to buy expansions, and the "next" game. COD4 was put out to compete with UT3 and other "visually appealing" games. Not to mention the competition from the console games. I do not think that the PR community needs to "overthink" the survival of this mod. It will last for a while, and imo gain popularity as these next gen games come out. WHY??..well, these games require very stout machines and expensive new hardware, Shader 3 graphic cards, 2 gig ram, dual core, 550 min watt power supply, pci express boards to handle the newer stuff, etc etc. Some people will not be able to keep up with these games both financially, and "invested time". So, they will gravitate to the games like bf2 for good gaming experience. HEck the ravenshield 3 community still exists and some clans even ladder still. That game uses the UT2 engine and is older and more antiquated than the PR python code. No, I think that the devs should continue down the path of perfection with what is given to them, and PR will survive..at least for a while.

BTW: COD4 was so disappointing. It was pretty, but way too hyper, fast and confusing. Too much going on, and too much eye candy..to the point of ridiculousness...You can still jump out of 2 story buildings and not get hurt..LOL., and as you shoot the machine gunners, they are quickly replaced by "magical" replacements that seemingly come out of nowhere. PLEASE...feed me some more garbage...

Cheers

What about Frontlines: Fuel of War? The guys behind that game created Desert Combat mod for BattleField 1942 so I'm sure they're taking a lot from that game.

In fact, the main game mode is just like AAS I think.

Off topic, but you should try the game again because there's a "hardcore mode" which dramatically increases damage (pretty much one shot kills, no jumping out of 2 story buildings), no crosshairs, no hud (map only shows up when your team calls in UAV). There are also tactical servers out there that kick people for bunny hopping, etc.

While I agree that COD4 does nothing to add to gameplay, Crysis sure does. How many other games do you know of that you can shoot down a tree and kill someone with it? How many games do you know of that have nukes in them that can be fired? How about blowing tires out and customizing your weapon while ingame? And if you know of a game with these elements, how many have all of them? Exactly.

For every couple of games that don't add anything to gameplay(COD4, UT3,TF2), you have several games that do add something like Bioshock and Crysis. Some games though like TF2 are just trying to copy their old gameplay elements because they worked and were fun.

I jumped off the 2 story tower thing in the training mission and died, so I don't know what buildings you are falling out of and not getting wounded from.

FYI Crysis wont run (or would barely run) on my machine and I don't think the game is worth the cost and effort of an upgrade.

Far Cry 2 OTOH - now that might be worth it...

HMM maybe if we pay EA they will give us the source code :D

But seriously there might be a chance that EA gives us the source code after releasing bf3 or maybe someone leeks it. But then again it may have been leaked already try googling :P

What about the possibility of changing over to an Open Source engine?
Then you can change the source code as needed?
even though most won't support half of what the current bf2 engine does.
But as the DEVs say; If you want it go code it.

LOL, that would be very difficult. Building an engine requires a lot of programming, mathematics and graphics knowledge. I doubt that a team of people with those skills will build an engine for free. The only way this could happen (and it has in the past in some cases) is if a dead company, or a benevolent company, releases the source code for an old engine. I don't see anyone doing that with a modern FPS engine at this time, but who knows.

There no way of obtaining the holy source code then? Not even by buying the rights to it somehow or anything like that?

Theres a game called 1944 dday operation overlord. It will be the most realistic shooter ever every created. Has everything this mod would need x100. The player amount is 256 or 512 I believe, WITH! around 250,000 ai!!!!! The ai is some special thing so it doesnt effect your comp. Everything is real in terms of handeling and firing. Also The size of the map is all of western Euroupe! Go to the forums and look at FAQ. The game is still in development but the modells look amazing.

Is that 1944 mod a real thing? Will it happen? We need to keep our eyes on that. Someone post this in OT.
