Can bots be utilised in multiplayer?

Post by MadTommy »

Just a curiosity i have... i searched but found no thread relating to this. Please redirect me if i missed it.

My thinking was, as a example.. having some civilian bots in insurgency mode. But these civilians would be neutral. Any killing of them would result in a larger penalty and any arrest would have no effect. After all not all civilians would support an insurgency.

Has anything like this been tried or thought of? Or is it simply not possible or worth the time?

Would cause lag because you'd have human players and bots to deal with at the same time AFAIK.

I think it's about number of bots... i said some. I dont see for example a max of 6 bots causing much lag.. maybe i'm wrong.

6 bots isn't going to add much to the game though.

TY2D2 my question was can it be done!

Anyway there is loads you could do with 6 bots to change the game dynamics.. it all depends on how you implement them.

i belive it can be done but every bot takes a player spot. so if you have a 64 player server 10 are bots then only 54 humans can play.

Bots should do the dirty work (manning defenses, ammo resupply, etc...)

The idea of bot-civilians is indeed great, and maybe, if the server admins can change the number of civ-bots it could work, but you'd never get a full server PLUS bots. Another idea would perhaps be to add a few static civilians to the bots. In houses or something. But real bot civilians are prolly difficult to code (well, i could imagine adding flags that give no tickets in insurgency and change from Ins to Brit or Brit to Ins whenever anyone comes "near" (~250m) them. The bots would run from flag to flag and... do nothing. Just like civvies :P But prolly you couldnt force them to use the civ kit only and it would always take player slots

(i have no idea what i'm talking about btw :P )

of thought for a long time about an alternate MOD game called squad leader where each person controls a squad of bots and they all work together..(so 6 squads a side)

total is only 12 real people...but could be alot of fun...

could be done via cooperative mode i suppose..

Co-op mode is a good idea if only to test out or practise tactics and cordination.

I think every server should have 1 bot just so theres always someone to play against, it would stop servers staying empty so long

1 bot and you on Kashan are never going to see each other.

As far as making bots into civis, the problem is that they are just too frickin dumb. The AI for BF2 was pretty poorly designed, and while the PR SP bots are a huge improvement, to redo them entirely would be a lot of work, if it were possible at all.

Assuming you did all that work, you would still have no bots most of the time because people kick bots from their slots on the server. So on a full or nearly full server bots would be useless.

Its a nice idea, but it is a lot of work to implement for little gain.

with the 128 player servers, i know they didnt work with 64+ people, but could those extra slots that cant be filled by people be filled by bots?....

I'm sure there are lots of ways to use the bots. But i think filling all empty slots with bots could be annoying as they tend to **** about doing nothing, in things like tanks.

I wasn't thinking of playing against them so much...

One idea is; they are neutral civilians in insurgency, except you wont know they are netural unless you observe them closely, where falsly arresting somone might get you a team penalty. Make the insurgency mode a bit 'richer' in tactics. i.e not every civilian is a collaborator. Or something like that.

But i wasn't sure if bots could be used in MP.
