Quick question regarding HMMWVs etc

Post by Symplify »

Why where the hummers and other such light vehicles largely replaced by the big thundering trucks? Is it more realistic for a squad to be driving around in a truck than in a hummer?

I'm not complaining, as such, but I just had the impression that hummers were used more, as they are the only vehicle I've ever seen in pictures of Iraq, can't recall ever seeing those big 6-wheelers.

Well those are Support Trucks and their needed to setup bunkers and firebases and the like. That's why there's so many.

Maybe there's hope in getting a certain Humvee for this role? personally, Id like to see some armored Humvees used in their stead, but of course, thats just me wishing. Kinda odd seeing a ton of those trucks in a combat enviro with like, very few Humvees in comparison. Then again, Ive never been to war :) <- not criticism, just personal observation/opinion

And besides, its just how it is for now. And longer prolly. :)

it is a bit odd, but you're not going to carry those kind of supplies in your humvee. So the deuce and a halfs are standins for whatever supply vehicles the factions use irl. I totally pulled that out of my butt if you can't tell.

I think it's reasonable, especially since there are no models to replace it right now. Maybe when some more realistic humvees get made it'll get changed.

Speaking of trucks, is anyone actually modeling an LMTV or are we stuck with the duce and a half?

In the theatre you only see them in guarded convoys? So the difference would be that the support trucks arent used as one off transports/combat transports like they sometimes are in PR. Wait for the commander build bug to be sorted out, then they will become VERY inviting targets.

I'd imagine there are so many pictures of hummers because they are a staple american vehicle, the average joe probably wouldn't immediately know that a LAV/whatever is american or chinese :-D

I'd say that the hummer/other vehicle ratio is very map dependant.

i think it would be more appropriate to have a HEMMT replace the 5 ton trucks, its more heavily armored i believe. but then again it would have to be made :-{

Maybe we should have some 'different' trucks with actual supplies that can only be driven by engineers (and maybe officers).
These could rearm vehicals and do all the normal stuff as well, now that would be cool. That woud give the engineer class some added bonuses!!!

Also, yes I believe there should be some more Humvees (50 cal) and the like on BIG maps. Maybe some that only spawn at the start of the round...
Time to rise to the occasion.

I agree, maps like kashan need humvees. Driving around the duce an a half is dumb if you have no intention of building. for example if my squad wants to move to the bunkers, we have to take a loud, big noisy, and unagile truck.

Put a bunker or firebase and you will get your hummer in 5 minutes.

Reason you dont see many hummers is the commander bug. One round on Jabal we had about 2 bunkers and a firebase. At one point there were about 6-7 Vodniks just on East Beach waiting for blackhawks to shoot with .50 :(

How about making building dependent on the supply box? Would make choppers even MORE useful.

Officer kit driven Strykers, Fv 432 Bulldogs, BTR 80s etc are the perfect replacement for the USI support trucks - the not so perfect part is modelling and texturing and UVing and unwrapping and coding and testing ....

Its a case of utility vs weaponry I think and the 50 cal makes that vehicle more of a weapon which they didnt want apparently

Also making the truck big, noisy, obvious & clunky to use means the enemy is totally failing to surpress any building efforts in that area, it makes for a good prerequisite

Same for using it as transport or ammo resupply.

The truck has no weapon so the area must be secured by other means before the utility is safe to proceed

I think they have the priorities correct in that looks are ranked far behind realistic gameplay and tactics

I do find it a tad irritating to spawn at base and go "Oh, no tanks, APCs, AAs, choppers or jets...just a big truck I can't drive...not that I'd last long in that nimble sucker against all the tanks in the hills..."

The problem is that light transport doesn't spawn at the main bases anymore. So when the team starts off, you have no choice but to take the loud, stupid truck to carry your squad.

There ought to be at least one jeep or whatever at the main base to start off with. Or maybe two and then reduce the number of trucks that start to two instead of three.

4 Jeeps/Humvees and 4 Trucks at the start of the big maps would be nice (Quinling and Kashan)

Thats because unlike the game proffesional militaries do not drive their utility trucks to the frontline and armed transports are normally used as taxis, not assualt vehicles. Soft skin vehicles are used in occasion but because of the typical uncertainty of an AO of Iraq, they arent the transport of choice. But if a war was in the type of scenario like PR where there is a clear frontline you would see more of these things because you just cant stuff all your infantry into APCs.
