Tactics: Vision Limits in Jeeps

Post by Fullforce »

In the following post, I hope to inform and improve your tactics when driving Jeeps and Buggies in BF2/PRMM 0.2.

Why? You may ask. Well, I feel like it. I love making seemingly pointless posts, if it helps one person on the battlefield.
For example, I once wrote up a piece about the realUSS Essex and how the In-Game L85A1 matches up to the real one. I'm so sad.

So, on with the post!

Because in PRMM, you cannot change cameras to 3rd person (and rightly so), it greatly limits your FOV (Field of View). You need to be on the look out constantly and use what you have to navigate the area.

So, I did this. Heres a summary of what you can see in the Humvee and DPV as a driver.

Humvee

Looking as far left as possible.

Far right as possible.

As you can see, looking all the way right enables you to see fairly well out of the back for reversing. Use this to your advantage as much as possible - don't reverse while looking ahead, turn around and look out the back to avoid unnessesary damage/death.
Note that if you have passengers, this greatly decreases your ability to see - the gunners legs and the two people sitting in the back block most of the view, so keep this in mind. If you must, get them to direct you were possible, because not only can they see, they can see a lot better than you can even without them sitting there.

The Blind spot on the Humvee is relatively small when compared to the others, but still is fairly large. Keep in mind what you can and can't see at all times. Always think where your blind spot is and avoid getting into a situation where you'd not be able to see and spot an enemy because of it.

Remember, as driver of the vehicle, it is your job to navigate properly with little or no damage to the vehicle. Do you see real drivers looking straight ahead? If you have communications with the passengers, then use them, but you should be competent enough to do it on your own, really.

Next up: DPV and PLA/MEC Vehicles.

I LOVE driving my teamates around...too much fun. Only thing I wish is that they had a bit more faith in the driver (me). I may drive a bit...um...like an ***? But, I will get a HMMV full of players to the next spot intact and unhurt...

...I guess people are used to the type of people you get driving on Vanilla BF2.

It is not about faith.. it is about badluck... everytime i am in vehicle everything is ok, but behind a corner we are face2face...eee.. mask-2-barrel with tank...
So i will go on foot rather ;]

Its not all about faith and bad luck - its knowing your Vehicles limitations and view radiuses, so this is why i made this lovely guide. :)

That's where the faith comes in though, I know how to handle the vehicle - just that my passengers don't know that - so at the first hint of trouble they all bail. Nine times out of ten I am fine and they are all left standing around!

this is a really nice touch to PRMM IMO. I always used to like driving in the 'realistic' view. I just like the way you can't see much, and you have to look around ect. I like coming under fire when in a convoy, its just cool, can't explain it.

Lol, good guide! I too love driving folk around, you get a sense of responsibilty and instead of being one guy in a car,* Que heroic music and national flag in backround * your a unit fighting together as one for the good of the country, for the good of your friends and family and all that you hold close to your heart! But yeah it is annoying when all your squad jump out before you reach your destination :-(

I've always really liked that about the Humvee, how you can reverse and see where you're going. The next generation of games will hopefully have working review mirrors.

COMPLAINT TO PLAYERS ABOUT VEHICLES: True in Vanilla, but especially true in PRMM, the Humvee/Vodnik are more than just transports. They can take a good hit, and they have that oh-so-important .50 cal. That's why it really baffles me when drivers either a) drive past so many guys, or b) drive right into the meat grinders so the vehicle is exposed at all angles.

Here's a tip for the driver: If you see someone ahead, don't go barrelling off the road and try to squish him up against the fence. Don't just drive past him hoping your gunner will hit him on the fly--he won't. It usually takes a LOT of luck to make those shots!

Instead, please stop. It goes a lot farther than just driving past, where for all you know, he'll just turn around, whip out his rocket/grenade launcher and grease all 4 of you in the transport.

As another general rule (although this one takes the cooperation of 2 players, so it's iffy), if you hear the .50 cal pounding over your head, stop. Likewise, on the gunner's part, don't just shoot at random **** because you have a long drive-- shoot when you mean it, and hopefully your driver can stop and give you a clear shot.

DPV

Image
FOV Shot.

Looking Right

Looking Left

As you can see, the DPV is a very hard vehicle to navigate with when driving in 1st Person.

Its Blind Spot is much larger than the humvees, and its hard to look backwards like you can in the Humvee. If you factor in the passengers/gunners, your view is even decreased further. So be aware, more so than the Humvee, where your view is and what you won't be able to see when the time comes.

Another downside is the fact that your gunners can only see forward - always bear this in mind and point directly at the thing you or your gunner is shooting at, to avoid problems with aiming limits (aiming left or right). This can be frustrating for the gunner as he can't shoot the enemy when they can, so always, always think of the gunner.

The DPV, however has more firepower than the Humvee (.50 cal and a 5.56 M249, the Humvee only has .50 cal.) but only fires forwards - the Humvee has a 360 degree fire arc for the gunner. Also a plus point is its speed - generally, don't use the DPV for transporting yourself or others around (although it works well for that), use the Humvee for that. Use the DPV as a weapons platform - look where your armanent is needed and put yourself in a position quickly.

One bonus of the weapons only firing forward is that you can always guarantee that your gunner(s) can see what you see. In a Humvee, it may take precious seconds for you to spot the enemy and alert your gunner (if he's listening at all) before he can begin firing. The forward facing guns concentrate the fire into a lethal barrage, and works well as a suppression tool.
