playing with out a mic can make real gaming very limited. i my self will ask a player to leave my squad (mic less player)for a DVBer or a player i game with regularly to join me instead. if i am SL i have too much on my plate to keep an eye on the ingame chat. it is all useless drivel to me anyway. and i the few times i attempt to read the game chat i have to refer to this
The AOLer Translator
however the time is consuming and i always end up dead from my ALT - Tab.

Mike-less usually isn't too much of a problem; some of the best players I've ever played with haven't used mikes. It's only a problem if the guy in question doesn't respond to your use of the mic. A regular rifleman or similar can get by with just using good SL-placed markers etc.
I'd rather have a silent and effective guy in my suqad than than a non-effective chatterbox that just fills the radionet up with a mindless stream of conciousness. I'm all for a joke and laugh over VOIP, but if someone's so busy bitching about other squads or having a laugh that other SMs can't get important messages - like requests for medics etc - through then I'd rather kick the guy with the mic.

I am a very laid back SL and I don't like to suddenly bark orders but nothing is more likely to get my Irish up than getting killed cuz some 15yo is yakking about fastropes or bullet penetration when we are in hostile territory.
But that OP Archer server that doesn't have VIOP really lets you know how important comms are because I don't really type all that well and I would guess conservatively that in 3 years of playing, even with a mic, 10-15% of my deaths were due to typing at the wrong place or time.
Friends don't let friends type !!!
I learned that on the OFP map "halo" where you start out with a 30 sec freefall and sometimes people got so wrapped up in what they were typing that they went splat !
And this is in a game you may have waited 20min to start and there is no respawn or rejoin.
So I would say that the money spent on a mic is more important than RAM or your video card.

And as the windshield melts
My tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend.
Finally I understand the feelings of the few.
