Personally the BF2 engine is due for retirement, however its just that finding a viable alternative that's virtually impossible..
What is your opinion on the BF2 engine?

I tried PR tonight for the first time and I had a ball! Love it.
If anyone else suffers from this, or you know someone who does, please pass this on: I recently watched an episode of MythBusters where they were seeking a remedy for motion sickness that doesn't have any side-effects (dramamine, for instance, just makes me sleepy). They discovered that the centuries old use of ginger is the best thing going. They gave Adam a ginger pill and it worked. Normally Adam would get really sick after being in the puke chair for 3 minutes. After taking a ginger pill, he was able to be in it for a half hour and still no sickness and the best part was no side effects!
Someone once recommended it to me, but I thought it was just some "herbal" thing that probably wouldn't really work, but after seeing Mythbusters, I'll be heading to the health food section and getting a big fat jar of ginger pills...and then load up all those games that made me sick in the past.BOOYAH! Look out boys, granny will be on a rampage now!
You are awesome. You edited a post for a spelling mistake and you call yourself a granny on a rampage. Ma'am, I tip my hat to you!

Why, TY Masaq!
It's so funny once my teammates find out I'm a grandmother... and funnier when I come in first of second place for my team. To quote the commander, "My grandmother could do better!" He's right! LOL
Well, the 550 mg ginger pills WORKED! I played BF 2142 for quite a while, but I find the excessive camera-bob and swaying disorienting. I tried Medal of Honor...same thing. Call of Duty 4 is awesome, I think I'll be able to handle that one with flying colors.
However, Battlefield 2 is my first choice for an FPS and Project Reality RULES! Look for CAF ll_ALICE_ll on the battlefield some time and if you ever want to beat up on an old lady...just try me.
Oh, thought I'd include a video link of me playing cos I know a lot of the kids don't believe old ladies like to play too! LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1VsFeQCqZk
Bring it on whippersnappers!

When I get lag in bf2 I know its pretty much the same for everyone where as in the hl2 engine it tends to favour a few players which is especially unfair in something like css, so on that factor alone I'd rate bf2 engine over it.
EA wont open up the bf2 engine to third parties because they know it would be too much competetion for anything they could create.
Its easy to spruce up the graphics and so on but to move on a generation in gameplay and other deeper factors it's going to be a while imo

It does a very good job considering what it has to do. Having planes, armour and infantry, spread over a pretty large area, in pretty reasonable detail graphically and physics-wise considering the scale of everything, pulling all that off with pretty minimal lag is quite a feat. Because of all that I don't see why it's slagged off so much.
Obviously the modding section has something to be desired, but that's not really got anything to do with the quality of the BF2 engine. But I'll rip into that 'cos that's the only **** thing about using the engine if you ask me, even then the PR team has achieved alot with it.

Yeah they know skilled, devoted people would make the ultimate tactical FPS and make EAs next installment of kiddie shit wrapped in pretty bow look exactly like what it is. As far as what a good possible engine for PR one I think is really good is the quake 4 engine. I played the demo of quake wars enemy territory and the engine does pretty much everything you'd need for a tactical shooter + it looks astonishing. There's leaning, aircraft, you can shoot individual wheels out. really great engine IMO.Sabre_tooth_tigger wrote:

The BF2 engine is great for its multiplayer aspect.. With such large maps and large numbers of players in the same server together is hard to find even today.. But in a modding aspect it can be a pain. I have tried doing some minor modding and I ran into multiple problems with the engine. Also, the Bf2 and Bf2142 engines are, in a way, worse than the Bf1942 engine. Since many things that were posible in modding for 1942, is imposible in Bf2 or 2142. Anyway its a ok engine, but not great or that flexible.

This engine sucks so badly. It's horrible to code something.. anyway PR is the best mod for games like this ever.

You sir, are very ungreatful. this engine was created in 2004, the time HL 2 was released, and manged to support 64 people on a server, with a huge map, actual PHYSICS! all types of vehicals, and great visuals. This game was amazing when it came out, and still amazes me, because many games of today struggle to get 64 players on a server with minimal lag.

After playing Crysis (yeah yeah I know), this game engine feels like it is from the stone age. Even if it isn't reality, the graphics obviously are unsurpassed, the physics (not talkig about the actual mathematical implementation) is just like it should be. Mow down trees with a minigun, blow up buildings, use objects to your advantage, vehicles that can be disabled in so many ways etc. Also weapon customization, and offcourse these little things that engines from well before BF2 already supported like leaning left/right.
All in all, Crysis creates a much better immersion, even for a nonreality game, then PR could ever reach on the BF2 engine. Note immersion!=reality
