Too bad i tried and that 9mm went through the helmet like it was a piece of paper even at a distance of 50 meters.. maybe you are misinformed ( Helmet - Bundeswehr issued helmet, Weapon H&K P8 )
german helmet right? maybe its not as good as other helmets? it varies from helmet to helmet. Its like comparing a ferarri with a ford mondeo.

And with the risk of hits in the face, i really dont think it would be worth making two headshots needed with 9mm in PR... so whats the discussion about anyway?

Do you guys realize that you're arguing about physics on the internet?

Get a life and play some computer games. :D

markonymous wrote:im no expert but im pretty sure the modern helmet can stop 7.62 rounds given right conditions. And you wouldnt be injuring your neck severely. If this were true anyone firing a gun would have broken their shoulder then the recoil hits because the power of the recoil is exactly the same as the power of the shot. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

You got the physics right, the biology wrong.

The neck =/= the shoulder. Shoulders can withstand an impact to the front very well, but a twisting motion can damage them quite handily. (Dislocated shoulder, anyone?)

The neck is great at supporting a heavy object (the head), where the force is being applied down through the spine, so long as the head is held naturally (awkward angles cause muscle pain). It's absolutely **** at withstanding forces that it's not designed to cope with - like being twisted too far to the side, or pushed forwards or backwards suddenly.

On top of that, there's the fact that the guy firing the gun is bracing himself, his body is physically prepared for the impact of the stock into the shoulder. The guy who just got a round glancing off his helmet will not have his neck prepared and braced for an impact.

There's every possibility that a glancing round could cause neck damage without blowing the shooter's arm off with recoil - because otherwise, no bullet would ever cause trauma to bones, only soft tissue.

Please, don't take a very good argument against having "knockdown" in games and use it to say that nobody will get a broken bone from a bullet. It's an inappropriate useage; they're two very different things.

The bullet won't knock a guy over because it doesn't have the mass to physically knock a body over. On the other hand, it has a lot of energy being focused through a small area (the front of the bullet) and so it has a very large force acting through it, and that force is easily sufficient to go through bones, or to damage them through secondary effects such as the head being pushed to one side very very quickly.
